Placer County sergeant dies while diving off Monterey coast
A Placer County sheriff's sergeant died after being found unresponsive underwater at San Carlos Beach on Saturday afternoon.Sgt. Michael Lyke, 51, of Auburn was diving with a group and was reported missing when that group reemerged from the water.Monterey Fire Department Division Chief Jim Brown said they got the call around 12:30 p.m. and were at the scene within minutes.Lyke was pulled from the water and taken to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, where he was pronounced dead.The Placer County Sheriff's Office said in statement:"We are devastated by the unexpected passing of Sgt. Mike Lyke."Sgt. Lyke was an exceptional member of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office family. He began his career with PCSO in 1996, and worked numerous assignments including corrections, patrol and investigations. Sgt. Lyke also held assignments at the Tahoe substation, as a dive team member and as a weaponless defense instructor. His most current assignment was running the civil division at the Sheriff’s Office."In August of 2012, Sgt. Lyke was named Employee of the Month for his willingness to solve any problem, his professionalism and his 'can do' attitude. He will be dearly missed, our prayers and hearts are with the Lyke family at this time."

Sgt. Michael Lyke, 51, of Auburn was diving with a group and was reported missing when that group reemerged from the water.

Monterey Fire Department Division Chief Jim Brown said they got the call around 12:30 p.m. and were at the scene within minutes.
