at least the trees give you an indication of where the river usually is. But the other problem out here is that you have part of this is Deer Creek and part of this is the river and they just kinda merge down in here, the one closest to us would be Deer Creek and the one farthest away is the awesomeness. But they're, the lines between them become really murky once you get down to our Wilton and uh and certainly down here toward 99. But yeah, the tree lines give you an idea where the the river is supposed to be but it's all pretty obscured right now and and so yeah, there's the Just part of 99 that there's *** lot of water around it and yes, that's that's Dillard that goes right there. Yeah, that's that's resuming. Yeah, you're zooming in on Dillard's. So actually it does look as though the water might be *** little bit lower. I mean you guys had *** different perspective earlier, do you think it's *** little slightly lower than it was before? Okay. Yeah, it's gonna be slow to recede. Yeah. So yeah, all the big rigs left so the cars are still left behind so the big rigs managed to get through And so yeah, it's *** relatively short distance on 99 that's uh that's closed but it's it's *** it's certainly *** low spot. wow. Yeah. Yeah, that makes sense. And as I looked down toward Dillard uh you can see you can see more of it than you could earlier, the water. Yeah, so it's it's receding but it's not going to uh it's not gonna go down in *** hurry and just see how it spreads out down here. Um And it just flowing it's just finding its own way. I don't know. Yeah so as we're looking out Dillard here you can see it goes under in *** couple of different areas. Um And the the the river is supposed to be on the on the north side and here it's just it's just spread out uh around that around that home and around these cars and yeah you can just see how you know *** car might be coming *** highway 90 or down Dillard and just uh trying to get the highway 99 just drives into this, wow. So you wonder if any cars get you know washed off the road and you see the J. B. Do you see the little islands that are behind the house here? Little green spots. So yeah come *** little bit more yeah those little islands right there. So when I was talking to uh Cosumnes fire earlier they said that the people in the back of that flatbed had uh they had been swept off and they found uh some dry spots and and it's probably something like that that they were standing on. Or maybe they were clinging to *** stump of *** tree or something like that. But it's just these little little higher spots that that some of those people had to be rescued off of by the helicopter in the middle of the night. We're actually in the very early morning hours. Yeah. And then as you look at the cars on 99, I mean this is my first perspective of seeing them this way. Um yeah, those, those are indeed, those are in deep muddy water. Yeah, yeah, look at, look at that, that one right there, that's just, that's, that's *** lot of water coming through that, that car, that car is going to be there for *** little while, wow, wow, I don't see any uh do you see any emergency vehicles out here? Um like on Dillard at this point, I'm not, I'm not seeing any from my perspective. Okay, It's interesting seeing vehicles on Dillard that are coming up to the there, they're, they're, they're, they're coming up to deliver the, to the clothes point and they're turning around Yeah, maybe if you could come *** little bit more to the yeah, *** little bit more just to the right, you'll see that on Dillard um, so that's where the cars are having to turn around, but so there's no, there's no stoppage up there, Cars just saying, Oh, I guess I can't go any, I can't get to Highway 99 from here. Yeah, so that's the, that's the dry potter Dillard, but, and eventually this will make its way, put more roads underwater farther to the south. So that's, that's Wilton off to our right straight ahead. Okay, okay. Why don't we, why don't we go up that way? Let's go Dillard and go up toward the Wilton area and see what's uh, what's going on there because we did get word of some levee breaches uh in that area, but they're, they're so hard to tell because of the way the river is now uh spread out. So again from this perspective, the Cosumnes River will be on this side of that tree line and Deer Creek's on the far side of that tree line. But as you can see that entire channel in between is just filled in with with water and then it spread on on well, especially on the south side and on the south side of the customers, that's where, that's where the town of Wilton is. So as we go out Dillard Road uh for those of you watching the road right in the uh in the middle of your screen right there, that's that's Dillard Road. So now we're heading east uh from away from Highway 99 where that where that road closure is where those cars were underwater. But we want to see now just the extent of the water that got into the homes in the Wilton area because we had uh people that were ordered to uh were asked to shelter in place or some people including when you get home last night because of some of the road closures that were in this area. So we want to get *** bird's eye view of what's happening in the in the Wilton area. So as you can see there's still *** lot of standing water out here. The river is supposed to be off to our off to our left and on the north side of this our view but there's water that's kinda seeped through *** lot of areas and like I said they weren't word of *** couple of breaches of the levees. But when it looks like this it's tough to figure out where the where the levees actually are or were. I mean it's just it's it's also tough to tell where sometimes where the river channel is but it's generally along that tree line that's on the on the north side of town. So yeah this is it's the Wilton area for the most part right now we're just seeing some water that's around homes and what's because Wilton has flooded *** number of times in the past from the Cosumnes River. What we end up seeing is people that that either rebuild or uh do new construction. They do build them up *** little bit higher than the uh they're they're surrounding terrain. So that's why we end up with *** lot of homes that might have water around them but maybe not in them And you you see *** lot of examples of that here. You see you see water and then you see *** home and um see yeah that's so far. Yeah there are lots of little channels out here for the water to run. And it was interesting when I was talking with one of the um somebody from like his some of his fire earlier today, they said that his his wife's family. Yeah look at that. So there's there's *** home that has *** lot of water around it. So he said his wife's family has lived out in Wilton for 50 years and They said that there's water from this that uh it's in places from this one that it wasn't in 97 or any of the other uh flood events like in '06. So the water just kind of finds its own its own way its own its own channel sometimes. So here's another example where you see water around the house, it might even be into the garage or something like that but it's not you're not seeing it up to the windows. So *** home like this you would um you might have some minor damage but you're not it's not as if your furniture uh in your house, you know you don't have three ft of water in your house where you're gonna have to replace drywall and all your furniture and that sort of thing. But um so j. B. Is there is there *** barn down there that I'm seeing that has more water in it *** little bit here. Yeah. Yeah I do think the water here has probably dropped at least at least 6" or so. So it looks as though the um the areas that are most impacted by this are on the north side of Dillard. Yeah you have that one and then and then if you go up *** little bit to the right john in the water there's *** red barn. Yeah right in there. Um Yeah that one has *** little bit more water in it. Is that *** horse that's sticking his head up? Uh Or is it just trying to figure out what's going on out here to um But water doesn't look too deep and as you can see as you go to where the house is, the house doesn't have water in it but the backyard where the barn is does so yeah it does look as though if you're going to have standing water on your property there's probably *** better chance of that if you're on the north side of Dillard as opposed to on the on the south side. Although there's plenty of water out here uh Doesn't look as though the damage is all that extensive and and in terms of looking for where there may have been *** levee breach. Oh actually um if you look up let's uh john let's if we look more or less straight away. So when I'm looking at straight ahead from my perspective uh does look as though there's some I've seen some white buildings that look as though they're they're in the water *** little bit more. I think we have to come around to the right *** little bit more of their T. V. I think. Yeah there and then up I think of I mean I may have lost track of oh there you are so oh yeah we're still around to the right more there john and right in there. Yeah that was the ones I was squatting at the front of the helicopter here. Yeah this is this is the most extensive I've seen but even here it looks as though the house looks like that has been built up doesn't it? Yeah so so this is probably because this is pretty close to the river. Um So this is an area house that probably has had um gone through this before and so the house is uh is built up more but as you can see trying to get in or out of that house today would be really difficult. So yeah there's *** there's *** lot of water around that house and then there's *** you know there's some outbuildings there on the left or maybe *** barn or something. Yeah so that water looks like it's *** few feet deep on the back side there and then if we come around to the right john there'll be *** home that has *** red it looks like *** red tile roof. Just *** little bit more around to the right right there and that one looks though it may be built up just *** little bit more so yeah that it has water close to it but it's on higher ground and that house you can get in and out of but um I'll bet there were *** little bit um *** little bit scared. Nice home pretty close to the river but the water came up but it doesn't look it looks as though it looks as though that property may have been built up as they built that house to keep it out of the water because they're they're pretty uh pretty close to all that. And yeah as as I'm as I'm looking out here as we look east it's *** bit easier now to see the um see where the river channel is, where it usually is. So yeah maybe if you come up *** little bit and then off to the right *** little bit more. Yeah so when you see that tree line, that's where the that's where the river usually is. Yeah so just yeah right in there and then it just kind of spills out now whether what you're seeing here is *** spillage from *** uh levee breach or just it just overtop the levee. Um You know it's it's tough to tell but *** lot of when we get the consumption that goes up this high and it crested over 16.5 ft up there in Michigan bar to the east of here. That's what they say happens. And this is the this is the usual thing that happens when it gets this high and it doesn't get this high very often I think it got this high in 06 and maybe in 17 and and in 97 when it was *** little bit higher. Um But yeah you do out here farther to the east to see *** better idea of where the channel is and where the levees are. And uh and the amount of the water uh Oh the road that just went right over here. Yeah. Yeah. I wonder what ah I don't know what road that is but yeah another road underwater. Oh and is that is that Wilton Road that's going across the the I think I think that might be at the top at the because I see ***. Yeah I think if you if you take so that roads underwater and then I think if you go diagonal up to the left on here I think that intersects with Wilton Road where it goes across the the river which is so come up uh and left *** little bit and where this road will t into that road that road that goes now away from you and up it goes across the river. I think that's Wilton road right there and that's where I was *** me tree was reporting from last night and couldn't get *** couldn't get across there and they were looked like they were reinforcing that that bridge last night there was *** bridge in there, like they were reinforcing that last night, they were worried about erosion or maybe they're already getting some erosion in there. So and I think that road was closed last night. I think I see, I can't tell is the traffic moving across that okay? I think that road was closed last night. So that's that's *** good sign that and that that prevented *** lot of people from getting into Wilton last night because we had the closer on Dillard and we had the closure here. So now at least that road is open and I think that's yeah that's Wilton Road right there, so and that's Sheridan on the other side. And it's it's always interesting because when we get this this Sheldon Sheldon, Right. Um So when um what what happens is with the uh we never see it on the flooding on that side, we always see it on on the south side here. Um So on the Wilton side of the casinos before, we don't see it on on the north side um on the Deer Creek. Sorry, Sure. Gotcha since uh since I am *** meteorologist. And let's talk about weather for *** second. We have, we have pretty good north wind and the other thing North wind does give us amazing visibility. I've heard, you know from where I am, I can see the sucker butte so I can see the sierra. It's just it's an amazing view in here and like up to three just and C forever but but JB is looking at more than barns and buildings that have some water in them. It does look as though the river is lower than it was in 97 maybe by *** foot or two. So we're seeing some water up to homes and around homes in 97. It was *** bit more extensive in homes. But then again there's also been other improvements done on the Cosumnes there um in areas east of of Wilton After the floods of 97 there were some changes that were made um agreements that were made if you will to have put *** low spot on the levee so that areas would be designed to flood in *** case like this. Um And so I'm sure that we're seeing some standing water south of the river in areas that are designed to and that helps take some of the pressure off of the areas downstream like in Wilton so that you don't get as much of the water that's coming out of Amador in El Dorado County once it passes michigan bar, there are some low spots in the levee that are designed flood points if you will. So that's one of the changes that was made after 97 But those are agreements that after he made so that you can you know if you're if you're the landowner say okay when it gets bad I'll have my land flooded. Yeah the the levee we're looking at here appears to be pretty intact and right. Yeah as I'm looking straight down here I can see I can see where the river is supposed to be. It's moving along in its channel just it's just really really muddy. Um ***. J. B. Is I'm looking straight down um I'm seeing *** some sort of earthmover down there. I don't know if that's if somebody's out there doing some work on *** levee or has been doing some work on *** levee. Yeah because that's the kind of thing that, oh actually john looks um behind us you see all those vehicles that are down there. They may be working on *** levee down there and actually it looks as though, yeah it looks as though part of it is caved. Yeah. Yeah. So so let's see what these vehicles are doing and you see that um So just past the past the this that little road and right there. Yeah that's that's that's that's part of *** levy the cave right there and you can see how it washed to the right there through the vineyard. But yeah that's so that's *** levee and it it's it's stuffed uh which meant that there was some water running through it um at some point probably last night when the water is *** little bit higher and when you saw those vehicles out there, they're probably um going to have to shore that up what they are gonna have to shore that. So that's probably what they're they're getting to work on right now. So when we heard about some levy failures or whatever, this is probably the type of thing that we're looking at. So what happens on some of these levees is they don't get tested very often and in the meantime you can see um how animals get in them and uh burrowing animals and you can suddenly get uh some water that starts creeping into them and as the water comes up the water finds these holes and it just starts eroding the levy from the inside. And it can uh just cause the the levy to slough *** little bit and it looks like that's what happened there and yeah, they're gonna get to work on that and get that fixed. It's on *** catastrophic levee failure, but it's *** it's something they want to get worked on. Yeah, that's that's pretty classic right there. So maybe one of the areas that we heard about and and what you see there on the left is where the river channel is, it's pretty clear to see the river channel uh you know, in this perspective as opposed to seeing the widespread water that we're seeing, you know, the the, the vineyard and the farm property that we're seeing on the north side of that has *** lot of standing water in it and it's from what happened last night. But yeah, that's, that's at least one levee repair that's gonna be going on here. Cool. Well, I was just, I was just thinking we could either go east or west. Let's go tell you what, let's go west because So let's go downstream on this and see where this water is going. So we know it's covered 99, we know it's covered Dillard road, but it's um, I want to see, yeah, let's go, let's go downstream. We'll go down toward the Twin cities area and then see what this is doing down toward I five. Um, I doubt this water is gonna impact I5, but since we're here and we can check it out, Let's, let's check it out. But as you can see from john shot here, that's just, it's just, so if you picture on the left side, that's the case, um, it's on the right side is where the deer creek is supposed to be, but in the middle is where we have both of them just kind of merged together in, in farmland now and uh, it's, it's, it's just kind of taken over. But this is the, this is the lower part of sacramento county and this is where the water just kind of accumulates down here. And, and you can also just tell from this terrain that it's so much flatter. Uh when, if you've been out toward rancher marietta Jackson Highway, that area, it's much more undulating and the water in that part of the Cosumnes River really moves along pretty quickly. But when you get down here, the water movement slows down and starts to pile up *** little bit more and then just spread out because it's tends to be pretty flat down here, beautiful farmland, but prone to flooding in cases like this. But again, you can kind of follow the tree line to see where the river usually is. Obviously it's and it's run its own course today. So what you're seeing going across the screen, that's, we're coming back up on Highway 99 and and and Dillard Road, that's Dillard Road that's going straight away from us and back into the back into the water. So yeah, because some of this kind of comes around from from the right to the left, it does *** little bit of *** curve here as it approaches 99 and then usually goes under 99 here around around Diller. But in *** case like this, the water just spreads out and and takes over Dillard and And Highway 99 and I'm not sure which road I'm seeing off to the left, the cars are driving through that, that's our know that might be our guy right there. Okay, that's okay. I bet you can. But yeah, so Arnold still has standing water out actually in two places actually, Yes, john, we ought to look at that because there's another place up here, I'm sitting on the left where the cars are more or less stopped. So that's yeah, that's that's gonna be our no there and there were some rescues that went on Arno last night as well last night and first thing this morning. So yeah, just in uh, you know, down, down from there, um closer to us, you see the cars right there that are going through the water? Yes, yeah, right in there. Yeah, Yes, that's that's that's our no road and I think again that water has receded *** little bit, I think it's easier to navigate because I think cars were swamped there earlier today. But yeah, that's that's that's our No, and they're kind of, yeah, they go through single file, they find the high spot in the middle of the road unless that Prius is uh it's stuck. But yeah, the, I'm not advising anybody do that, but if you have to do this, you, you find the high spot in the road which is usually in the middle and and if you're polite, you, you alternate that one, go one way and let the other one go the other way and hope that the car coming by is going too fast to swap your car, Give you much week. Yeah, that, that car right there is probably stalled, that's *** couple of cars stalled there. So that silver one, maybe that might be because that's off the side of the road, looks like it might have been swept out. That may have been where they had to do one of those rescues earlier today. Yeah, yeah, so this is when the, when the water was higher, that car got um got washed off the road and you can just kind of see that it it floated and was taken in the current and and and it's gone. Um you know, I think that that's probably one of those cases where earlier today they got people out safely but we didn't hear about rescues going on on Arno and that's probably one of them. Absolutely, So I'll be heading downstream on on this For Franklin Boulevard, which is between 99 and five. Yeah, we can't urge people enough to not drive on the roads out here. Um it's too many rescues last night and to hear that there still may be some going on now, just just don't just don't do it. Oh yeah, look at that, wow! Yeah, so get to *** certain point, you get off and you go back down the frontage road and then you then you head well no, you can't head east because so this is this is gonna be twin cities here and you can see twin cities underwater straight ahead of us, john you can get around to that in *** second because we're kind of heading parallel to that. But yeah there's *** spot here where twin cities goes underwater. So. No directly in front of us. Sorry about that john so we're yeah so this is twin cities that you see now and then see how it dips down and and there it goes underwater right there. So what you're looking at is twin cities road which runs between 99 and and um and five and um Yeah more cars here and submerged, swamped. Uh but they're you know more rescues here and this is the exact spot that there was *** dramatic rescue helicopter rescue from in 1997 it's this exact spot. Um And uh I don't know if there were any any helicopter rescues that had to be done here this time but but this is the first time this part of Twin Cities Road has gone under water. So what you're looking at is is twin cities underwater and more cars that were swamped and they're stuck there and it just you know you see the current that's where the that's where the river river is supposed to be on the other side but it just um it just sweeps it look at that. Yeah so we hope everybody get out of there okay. And then um yeah and then john eventually just keep going up on twin cities, there's *** home up there too that looks like it has *** lot of water around it to step up on the right side of the road, on the other side of those trees. So you can see here that the home is built up and it's dry and the barns in the water. So yeah this is an area that's that's flown to printing uh prone to flooding. This isn't the first time that this is uh this area has been under this much water and so it looks as though the home is okay and the cars are dry but the barns barn has *** lot of water in it. So it's on, it's on Twin Cities road and um there are other little roads out here that I'm seeing that you know I don't even know what they are but little roads that are impassible out here. So do we know any more about the oh I see, I can see the helicopter straight up straight ahead of us john um uh it's just about to cross Twin cities up ahead of us is where it must be the Sac Metro or the Sheriff's helicopter is and so we should find out what, okay and that's the Sheriff's helicopter. Okay and that's the franklin airport off the right okay. And so where would this Tahoe be? I see where they're circling. I'm just not seeing oh is that it right there do you think john yeah it looks like it and it also looks like it's near power lines. Oh my oh my honestly not not *** good way to start your year. And uh the other thing I'm seeing here is that uh franklin boulevard there there it's closed. Um at twin cities you have to get diverted off because franklin boulevard then goes underwater so that's what you're looking at. There is Twin cities road um near franklin and nice home side there and they're all surrounded by water and then there's there's *** barn in *** home there lots of water around it and again this is that's on the south side of Twin cities road and you can just see the current of the water just blowing through it from from north to south. Just hope so people are are safe in there or they're not home and then john if you can go up *** little bit you'll to your top side you'll see that will be franklin boulevard. And then um to the left is where franklin boulevard goes back under water right there. And uh yeah it's there's *** railroad track and then and then farther to the uh to the right is where their cars are getting turned at frank they're they're coming down franklin and they're getting turned on. Twin cities going to be west right there. Yeah so yeah this is *** it's gonna be tough to get around this part of the county for *** couple of days with some of these roads will be blocked for *** while. Do you have any update on our Tahoe do we do we wanna stick around for that? I think I see *** different helicopter off to the left that's that's still *** share Sure. Yeah there's there's *** lot of this going on and and you're you see you know cars that are stuck in cars that are getting through and I don't think you really really want to roll the dice, it just gets deeper and deeper, putting it more of *** wake water going into the engine compartment and you know and that's really deep. Yeah and and I know that the uh you know if you've driven through any sort of standing water, you know that the idea is you you want to keep some forward momentum but I think that's *** little bit too much. That's that's definitely water going into the engine compartment there, that's that's some deep water, that person's putting up some wake. I would not recommend this at all. Oh yep, is that ***, is that *** pickup truck? Okay? Yeah that's that water's pretty deep. Oh yeah you know the semi is gonna put up *** lot of, *** lot of wake. Yeah and so is the big rig gonna go or is he just gonna say say nana? No thank you, that's pretty deep there and and so you know from, from the, you know from the big perspective here um We probably have already seen the crest of this farther to the east, like in Wilton the high waters are highest water has already gone through and we've probably seen the highest water at 99. But that means that here we're probably still seeing the highest water that we're going to see right around now and and it will gradually very slowly recede, but it's that crest if you will, that, you know, starts in michigan bar and then makes its way down through slough house and down to Wilton down to 99 then eventually the I five um or into the delta. But so it's that crest and it's about um 18 to 24 hours to get from the michigan bar area to highway 99 then it's another few hours to get across highway 99 here toward franklin. So it said it's that that um that high point on the, on the graph if you will. And we saw the high point in michigan bar yesterday afternoon. Perfect, yep, yep, right there. Oh yeah. Oh yeah, And I'll bet they've been busy the last 24 hours. Alright, we can stick around for this and see how they extricate these people and try to get around these cars that are in big rig that's in front of them. Yeah, I wonder if they're saying you guys don't go forward? Oh and and and I think that I think that red car is stalled there, isn't it? And is the pickup truck stalled too? Or is it trying to get by? Yeah, yeah. Oh no, oh no, Oh no, oh no, this is *** mess. Oh, jeez, and so all these other cars are trying to get out of the way, so the emergency vehicle get through uh yes, it's *** total mess because you can't go off the side of the road because it just drops off into deeper water. So I think that white pickup has to back up and get behind the red car and let the emergency vehicle go through. There we go, kind of, no another vehicle is coming. So for those of you that are watching this, so we're this emergency vehicles trying to get to *** stalled vehicle that's down here in the deep water, Black Chevy Tahoe, that there's somebody in and uh so just really okay. Uh well, I was just bringing people up to date on what it is that we're looking at here, uh that um that so so there there are people that are stuck in that, in that Chevy Tahoe, and so there there were watching as uh as they're going to try to get these people to dry ground um but obviously they were driving driving down here, they got in the water and the car stalled out and there are people in there right now and they they uh they're in need of rescue and rescue is on the way, but trying to get the rescue vehicle down there was it was *** bit of *** mess with the other traffic that was backed up in here but I think they're they're on the way and and I guess now we have *** helicopter on the way to to that J. B. Maybe might have *** better view than I do but is it can I can just see *** driver, can you see more than that? Okay just just for reference dan, what what altitude are we flying at? And they're probably well they're gonna be down there at 500 or less. Okay okay all right okay so for those of you wondering I was just talking to dan Oppenheim, the pilot No no it just wasn't on my okay now I should be transmitting. Okay perfect. Huh? So I have the rescue helicopter insight, it's over the franklin airfield right now, it's about midfield. Oh I see him. There we go, okay you go, *** little left so he's he's about to go over the nine. There you go. Alright so let's see what they do here. So um dan do you think this would be *** hoist rescue most likely? Um It's either gonna be *** hoist or I would imagine *** dinghy of some sort but the helicopters here I'm expecting *** hoist rescue. Uh the only concern that I would have would be the wires and proximity to the to the Tahoe, yep there are power lines very close, which makes that uh more dangerous. And uh, and also we have, well at least the roads parallel with the wind. We have *** good north wind today, but the road is more or less parallel with that north wind. So don't have to worry about *** crosswind. Yeah, with high wind like this, it's easy for the helicopter to just face into the wind. And uh it looks like the hoist is on the right side, which is gonna be the same side as the wires, which is gonna give them just *** little and so that's what they're doing. They came down from the north to the south now they're turning back into the north which is into the wind and you can see from their shadow, just how low they are flying to assess the situation here and they very well might decide that using *** voice is not necessarily ideal and they might request *** vote. That's what I would think. You know, just to me that would be uh easier than the and the hoist, you know? Yeah. I almost wonder if they're just gonna give him *** push. Thank you. Put the car in neutral and just push him to where uh no, nope, nope. They're getting out. It looks like the driver's door just opened. Oh yeah, I still have the helicopter. Yeah. You know, I, yeah, well, I also just, I'm just, I'm just wondering if maybe they also have *** might have *** child and the child seat in the back too because I know if it was me and my car got stuck like that, I'd be like, okay, water's knee deep or whatever. I'm wade my way. I but but if I had *** child in the back, I obviously wouldn't be wanting to do that. So is that the driver that's out the sunroof? Yeah. Is the helicopter still circling there dan, The helicopter is still circling. They're making *** really wide orbit so it doesn't look like they're going to be participating. They're just observing what it looks like. Okay, so you know, After talking with the Cosumnes fire folks today that we were with 99 and then watching this, it's it's never ending. The list of things that our firefighters are called to do on any given day, yep, yep. And and they're in and appears though that was the only person in there, no need for *** hoist. And uh and they're happy to be out of there and don't worry about the car and another day yeah, they are all right. It looks like I five is going along nicely, there's water that goes under it. So it doesn't look as though I five is likely going to be impacted by this because I'm just kinda looking around here, you just close up the hatch for them. How thoughtful, very thoughtful. So yeah JB is as well. I was just uh looking at my window, so so we look over to I five and traffic is going along nicely on five and the water water goes under um if you go to the left *** little bit, john, you'll see the, you see where the main channel of the river goes right underneath I five right there and so you know, that's, that's where the river is supposed to be, you can see it spreads out, it's pretty close to I five, but I don't think we're gonna get any of the lane closures on five, that's the water's pretty high underneath there, but um I don't think we're gonna get *** case like we saw On 99 where the road gets closed, but that's that's some high water out there, So that's good news, that's so with with 99 close, it's nice to have five as the alternative and it doesn't look as though it's going to be impacted by, by flooding, which is great. But yeah, the water out here that we're seeing is it's going to be out here for *** couple of days, it's only gonna slowly go away, but where we are right now uh just to the east of I five, they're probably seeing the highest water they're going to see right around now and over the next few hours and then we'll just kind of slowly recede over the next couple of days, but the roads that we've been looking at like like Twin Cities and Dillard, Arno and New Hope is down here somewhere um Although those roads are gonna be underwater for for *** while and they're impassable and we advise you not to use them, you do have someone hanging out at the fire company and it looks like the emergency vehicle is backing up the road where they came so it's quite possible. I think they're going to who transfer the victim into the buy *** helicopter, interesting. Oh, that looks like it's someone's yard, but at least it's dry and then just back slowly, it's, it's so disorienting when you don't know where the side of the road is? So just easy does it? It also appears as the pickup trucks that we saw past that Tahoe earlier made it to the intersection and then it got stuck, meaning there are likely, Yeah, and it's, you know, it's nice that we do have *** clear day out here because you know, you can just imagine how much more dangerous these rescues would be if it was still windy and stormy, like it was yesterday. Um Yeah, is that somebody sitting on top or is that just somebody in there and that's like their backpack on the top? No, now they're getting out of the sun, Should we tell the, yep, and that's just it, You and john you saw this the other day, vehicle goes through, they think they're through and then the vehicle stalls out, What was that friday on upon Keefer and now this person needs to get rescued. Yeah at the tv the fire personnel just have to be I just wanted to bring it to your attention. I don't know if you guys austin at this point because they were doing rescues and then um and then borderline exasperated because it's the same thing. Gotcha. I just wanted to make sure that you knew that he was the 1500 for you. Just just it doesn't uh it doesn't pay. I mean it's we're watching vehicles go around and and dry areas getting through there, get to their place with their vehicles intact and not like this and that that car is not salvageable sadly. I'm not surprised. Yeah that was yeah there was *** body in that other submerged vehicle. Yeah but that um so Mark. I know you are not listening to the helicopter frequency but um Just spoke to fire copter one which is on the ground over there. They're going to oh one second. Yeah we sure are. Thank you. Um They are going to try to do *** boat rescue or walk that person out of that white pickup and if they cannot do that then they'll do *** hoist rescue using the helicopter over there wow. Yeah. Do you see *** I don't see *** vehicle that has *** boat or upon it right around the area right now I do not but it also seems like if that person is safe. Yeah and uninjured then getting them out in *** timely fashion might not be their top priority. Might be waiting for *** while. But man yeah, that's just and this water is, is gonna stay high for *** while. This is probably as high as it's going to get. But it's um just this is just, it's good to be exasperating from these these these firefighters. So there's the vehicle that they took the first person out of the Tahoe looks like they're talking to the property owner and there's the helicopter so chopper just took off again. I know right? Yeah, I would think that the hoist rescue would be their um their their last resort. I mean it seems like the riskiest, don't you think completely agreed. It is not *** simple task. They have wires directly in front of that vehicle, so voice rescue and the best of circumstances can be incredibly effective and efficient for what it is, but it's not something that they're eager to do. If it's not completely necessary, yep, it's just, it's just over to the other side. Okay, looks like they're gonna land, let someone off and see if they can walk *** person. That makes sense. Yeah. They said they were going to see if they could walk the person. I think that that land wasn't all that dry for them if it's too soft to land them. Yeah that road's there, that road's impassable. No, sadly the driver didn't know that until they it's really easy for us to look down, be well aware that that's not gonna help the situation, but they do not know that unfortunately. So now they're pointing the helicopter back into the wind but between so so is he gonna is he trying to put *** couple of skids down on that little dry just enough to get someone out possibly and he's dangerously close to wires? I mean in my perspective it was good About one rotor diameter. Uh huh. Which I mean if you look up right now you can see the edge of our rotor disc and that's the level of precision that helicopters can use. I mean the pilot can look out, is aware exactly where the rotor disk is in relation to instructions. Alright, so we let this this this person out to wait out there and try to help this guy out of that white white truck and he's not sure where the the highest ground is between here and there. Yeah, no, and and you know, and it's by the side of the road and you know how the sides of the road are there? That yeah, exactly, the drainage is on the side of the road. Yeah, so this is *** good pairing. There we go. Yeah, yep, just what we're afraid of. Yeah, yeah, yep. And another factor is that these rescuers, I don't know how many hours they've been working today but I know that the helicopter crew mentioned in passing over the radio that they were Out at 4:30. Yeah. Yeah and this isn't the first one they've had to do today and this is it's *** it's *** long day and and and they've been doing this countless times today alright sounds good. We will definitely be keeping an eye on you. They're going to try *** hoist rescue there potentially walking the victim down to they said to the south and then and then hoisting from there I can't actually see the helicopter, it's in my blind spot. It's to the it's it's to the left yep okay and that yeah that four firefighters just in there in *** nasty spot. So in *** case like this since they already have the firefighter on the ground and if they're going to do *** hoist r. Is the I take it the person on the ground is going to assist with the hoist and help the person get get hooked up in that sort of thing provided they can get over to the person. Otherwise when they do *** hoist what they might do is send an attendant down from the helicopter retrieve the victim but then the rescuer on the ground is very familiar with the equipment so he will not need that attendant necessarily to descend down again they can just lower *** cable to him and he'll be able to attach himself. Gotcha, But in all likelihood they will not have *** victim attach himself without some amount of supervision. Gotcha, wow. And the other submerged vehicles we see there. I guess those people did get out, we're able to walk out when their cars got submerged and maybe those vehicles have been there for six hours, we don't know. And then this the white car went by and got stuck and we have somebody in there, not the way to spend *** sunday afternoon. And yeah, there's just there's no way good way out of their water on every road as soon as the victim lifts in the helicopter, there's *** fence between the driver and the rescuer. Oh, okay. There are several fences reporting that there are multiple fences between the driver and the rescuer that are completely submerged. You cannot see barbed wire. Yeah, yep, that makes that makes sense. So yeah, just putting the rescuer into harm's way. Yes. And the combination of barbed wires and strong current barbed wire that you cannot see in strong current. It's just *** recipe for danger. Exactly. Yeah, I think that's gonna be the best way mark. Just checking in how you doing. I'm doing good. Okay. Yeah, absolutely. Oh yeah, I'm I'm I'm doing fine. I'm, you know, the view up here is uh is amazing if you, you know, just look at the what an amazing day it is up here with the beautiful visibility, um you know, the flooding is, is uh, it's for me talking about flooding, talking about the Cosumnes River and, and you know, numbers and graphs and that sort of thing. It's nice to put it all in perspective from, from the air and even being on the ground by it earlier today. That's one perspective, but seeing it from the air is uh, is really uh educational for me. Um, it's uh, it really helps me to understand better how all this water is flowing and the, and then seeing these rescues that are going on, being able to witness it firsthand instead of, and the, the, uh, what, what the firefighters go through and, you know, we talked about the, okay, they, it was kind of *** daring, daring, probably not for them, but *** daring what it looked like landing just to find some dry spot to be able to get that person on the ground and then they, you know, we, we see them get in the water and they, you know, encountering the fences and deep holes of water and um, so it's just what, what the firefighters and the rescuers go through that we, you know, we don't really see, we don't understand when, when we're, when we're at home watching on television, we don't know what it took for those rescuers to get to the place to rescue somebody and the hours that they go through and never mind the training, they go through to prepare themselves for daylight today. But yeah, this is um this is this is amazing perspective of this. Sorry? Um I just heard from the fire copter, one that they are not able to do *** hoist because of the proximity to the wires, they cannot get him across the road due to wires. So they are going to wait and when *** boat is available, they will bring in *** boat. But this person might be here for some time. Alright, well, I think, I think that's I think that's what we should do. I don't think we have to wait for this. Yeah, it's gonna be quite *** while, so um and and it would've been nice to see them rescue, but alright, we will stick around for just *** moment. And uh yeah, so I wish them the best and I know that they're they're going to are going to hoist their rescuer out. Oh, so if we stick around and we'll get to see the Alright, let's let's do that because he can walk back over right or I am not sure where they are going to do it. But um they've opted for *** hoist for the rescuer instead of landing and having them walk, don't you? I do my nose there, maybe half *** mile, *** little bit right to the right, *** little bit more, *** little bit more, keep going there, There you go. So yeah, he's banking around coming from the north pass the pass the road and then uh past the power lines and then oh the so I can see the guy on the ground, he's gotten over to that dry ground where they left him off, But when they left him off they didn't do *** complete landing, they covered with one on the ground, so it's easier to get out than to get in that way. Is that what you're saying? Alright, well we might be able to see *** hoist rescue anyway, even if it's just ever rescuer. Exactly, this is what they do all their training for. That's right, and it's it's interesting, you know sometimes dan when you're up flying and europe over Folsom Lake, I've seen it up over Folsom Lake, is that uh some day uh you know it's *** quiet news day, it's quiet weather day and europe flying over like I said Folsom Lake and these helicopters will be out there and they'll be doing the training, sometimes they're doing water drops and sometimes they're doing um they're dropping people on the ground and and you know they do their training yeah for aviation, there's *** busy season but it's *** year round job. So yeah, you know you think about the helicopters that are involved in firefighting and then on days like today with uh with water rescues going on, so looks like he's making *** wide circle off to the west and then trying to come in from the south. But the rescuer is on dry land about where they dropped him off, we'll see how this this whole list operation goes dan. Do you know off the top of your head from about what altitude they usually do *** hoist. It really just depends on the instructions lower is better. Uh you don't necessarily need to be incredibly high so if they have *** big open area that's just not suitable for landing because it's too soggy then they're probably gonna get pretty low, yep. And then what they'll do is the, remember on the skid is going to maneuver the cable directly to the rescuer on the ground okay? You know dan I'm enjoying being in live up to three as in in live up to three. You couldn't coerce me to be out on the skid on live up to three. Well we have doors attached so please keep your hands and feet inside. Absolutely. But honestly the versatility and maneuverability of helicopters. What you're, what what you're seeing right now is what really sparked my interest in flying really? That's true. So so the firefighter on the on the skid has the hoist in their hand, right? Yes, they have the cable and the control for it. The hoist is actually controlled by the person in the back and that person is working along with the pilot, fine tune location. They're gonna say okay move forward, move left and they'll guide them into exactly where they need to be, you can see the cables being lowered. Did he just catch that? Not yet, okay and he's already wearing *** harness or that sort of thing so he does not need much time, he's just gonna flip it onto himself okay? And they will be on their way and there he goes. There they go, yeah way back. Oh they know they're on camera, I've been talking to them, They'll be on the 5:00 News I can guarantee. So are they gonna bring him in? Are they gonna bring him over to some dry ground or clear? They'll likely bring him in but helicopters are *** lot more stable with *** little bit of forward air speed and so that's why as soon as he was appropriately attached the helicopter started to move, they move on. Well we did see *** successful voice Alright, alright, sounds good to me. Alright. Very nicely done. Thank you for the wave you too. This has been *** really enjoyable flight to get the perspective of this flooding today. It's always nice when we can bring people on board, you get *** better idea of what we do and how it, how it looks, our limitations as well as capabilities and and as as I'm always paying attention to the weather parameters that you're dealing with on *** daily basis to, you know whether it's visibility when it's uh it's tricky, yep, wow. So yeah, you know, as we were talking about on the air this morning, on the, on the west slope, we had 6 to 10 inches of rain and parts of El Dorado and Placer County and, and gravity just takes it down and it gets down here into the valley floor and it just spreads out and um and the great thing about this is, I mean, as as awful as these cars under waters of his homes that have water near or in them is um, this standing water out here does, does percolate down and it helps to recharge our, our groundwater to some extent. So it's, it is, well, this has been ***, *** very big storm for us, it's obviously *** beneficial one as well. We've seen significant increases on Folsom Lake, we've seen significant increases on our other reservoirs. Uh, so this is uh, this has been, this is helpful after years of drought, not saying we're out of the drought yet, but this is, this is, this is the way we get out of all this water. Yeah, we are, we are definitely going in the right way, but the thing that I'm afraid of is, you know, last year is still too little too fresh in my memory. It's uh what's, what's interesting is that *** year ago today, we actually had more rain in sacramento that we've had so far this year, I think last year, at this point we had like 14 inches of rain and this year *** little over 10 were obviously way above average, but last year we were further above average and then we went really dry in january, february and March. And so what we um you know what, we don't need maybe more storms with the same magnitude of what we just had thursday through saturday. We definitely do need to get more rain and more sierra snow between now and april and to help fill those reservoirs even more. By the time we get to the uh you know the March or april and may the flooded dairy right off our right side. Oh yeah cows are in the water. Alright. Do we need to make any stops on the way home? Can you go, can you go through in and out? I'll just land on the roof. I think you can hop out. No, I think we're good to go from the Executive. It'd be great to get it to go order from *** from *** drive through, just drop *** hoist and just have them put it in there and just take it out at least the trees give you an indication of where the river usually is. But the other problem out here is that you have part of this is Deer Creek and part of this is the river and they just kinda merge down in here, the one closest to us would be Deer Creek and the one farthest away is the awesomeness. But they're, the lines between them become really murky once you get down to our Wilton and uh and certainly down here toward 99. But yeah, the tree lines give you an idea where the the river is supposed to be but it's all pretty obscured right now and and so yeah, there's the Just part of 99 that there's *** lot of water around it and yes, that's that's Dillard that goes right there. Yeah, that's that's resuming. Yeah, you're zooming in on Dillard's. So actually it does look as though the water might be *** little bit lower. I mean you guys had *** different perspective earlier, do you think it's *** little slightly lower than it was before? Okay. Yeah, it's gonna be slow to recede. Yeah. So yeah, all the big rigs left so the cars are still left behind so the big rigs managed to get through And so yeah, it's *** relatively short distance on 99 that's uh that's closed but it's it's *** it's certainly *** low spot. wow. Yeah. Yeah, that makes sense. And as I looked down toward Dillard uh you can see you can see more of it than you could earlier, the water. Yeah, so it's it's receding but it's not going to uh it's not gonna go down in *** hurry and just see how it spreads out down here. Um And it just flowing it's just finding its own way. I don't know. Yeah so as we're looking out Dillard here you can see it goes under in *** couple of different areas. Um And the the the river is supposed to be on the on the north side and here it's just it's just spread out uh around that around that home and around these cars and yeah you can just see how you know *** car might be coming *** highway 90 or down Dillard and just uh trying to get the highway 99 just drives into this, wow. So you wonder if any cars get you know washed off the road and you see the J. B. Do you see the little islands that are behind the house here? Little green spots. So yeah come *** little bit more yeah those little islands right there. So when I was talking to uh Cosumnes fire earlier they said that the people in the back of that flatbed had uh they had been swept off and they found uh some dry spots and and it's probably something like that that they were standing on. Or maybe they were clinging to *** stump of *** tree or something like that. But it's just these little little higher spots that that some of those people had to be rescued off of by the helicopter in the middle of the night. We're actually in the very early morning hours. Yeah. And then as you look at the cars on 99, I mean this is my first perspective of seeing them this way. Um yeah, those, those are indeed, those are in deep muddy water. Yeah, yeah, look at, look at that, that one right there, that's just, that's, that's *** lot of water coming through that, that car, that car is going to be there for *** little while, wow, wow, I don't see any uh do you see any emergency vehicles out here? Um like on Dillard at this point, I'm not, I'm not seeing any from my perspective. Okay, It's interesting seeing vehicles on Dillard that are coming up to the there, they're, they're, they're, they're coming up to deliver the, to the clothes point and they're turning around Yeah, maybe if you could come *** little bit more to the yeah, *** little bit more just to the right, you'll see that on Dillard um, so that's where the cars are having to turn around, but so there's no, there's no stoppage up there, Cars just saying, Oh, I guess I can't go any, I can't get to Highway 99 from here. Yeah, so that's the, that's the dry potter Dillard, but, and eventually this will make its way, put more roads underwater farther to the south. So that's, that's Wilton off to our right straight ahead. Okay, okay. Why don't we, why don't we go up that way? Let's go Dillard and go up toward the Wilton area and see what's uh, what's going on there because we did get word of some levee breaches uh in that area, but they're, they're so hard to tell because of the way the river is now uh spread out. So again from this perspective, the Cosumnes River will be on this side of that tree line and Deer Creek's on the far side of that tree line. But as you can see that entire channel in between is just filled in with with water and then it spread on on well, especially on the south side and on the south side of the customers, that's where, that's where the town of Wilton is. So as we go out Dillard Road uh for those of you watching the road right in the uh in the middle of your screen right there, that's that's Dillard Road. So now we're heading east uh from away from Highway 99 where that where that road closure is where those cars were underwater. But we want to see now just the extent of the water that got into the homes in the Wilton area because we had uh people that were ordered to uh were asked to shelter in place or some people including when you get home last night because of some of the road closures that were in this area. So we want to get *** bird's eye view of what's happening in the in the Wilton area. So as you can see there's still *** lot of standing water out here. The river is supposed to be off to our off to our left and on the north side of this our view but there's water that's kinda seeped through *** lot of areas and like I said they weren't word of *** couple of breaches of the levees. But when it looks like this it's tough to figure out where the where the levees actually are or were. I mean it's just it's it's also tough to tell where sometimes where the river channel is but it's generally along that tree line that's on the on the north side of town. So yeah this is it's the Wilton area for the most part right now we're just seeing some water that's around homes and what's because Wilton has flooded *** number of times in the past from the Cosumnes River. What we end up seeing is people that that either rebuild or uh do new construction. They do build them up *** little bit higher than the uh they're they're surrounding terrain. So that's why we end up with *** lot of homes that might have water around them but maybe not in them And you you see *** lot of examples of that here. You see you see water and then you see *** home and um see yeah that's so far. Yeah there are lots of little channels out here for the water to run. And it was interesting when I was talking with one of the um somebody from like his some of his fire earlier today, they said that his his wife's family. Yeah look at that. So there's there's *** home that has *** lot of water around it. So he said his wife's family has lived out in Wilton for 50 years and They said that there's water from this that uh it's in places from this one that it wasn't in 97 or any of the other uh flood events like in '06. So the water just kind of finds its own its own way its own its own channel sometimes. So here's another example where you see water around the house, it might even be into the garage or something like that but it's not you're not seeing it up to the windows. So *** home like this you would um you might have some minor damage but you're not it's not as if your furniture uh in your house, you know you don't have three ft of water in your house where you're gonna have to replace drywall and all your furniture and that sort of thing. But um so j. B. Is there is there *** barn down there that I'm seeing that has more water in it *** little bit here. Yeah. Yeah I do think the water here has probably dropped at least at least 6" or so. So it looks as though the um the areas that are most impacted by this are on the north side of Dillard. Yeah you have that one and then and then if you go up *** little bit to the right john in the water there's *** red barn. Yeah right in there. Um Yeah that one has *** little bit more water in it. Is that *** horse that's sticking his head up? Uh Or is it just trying to figure out what's going on out here to um But water doesn't look too deep and as you can see as you go to where the house is, the house doesn't have water in it but the backyard where the barn is does so yeah it does look as though if you're going to have standing water on your property there's probably *** better chance of that if you're on the north side of Dillard as opposed to on the on the south side. Although there's plenty of water out here uh Doesn't look as though the damage is all that extensive and and in terms of looking for where there may have been *** levee breach. Oh actually um if you look up let's uh john let's if we look more or less straight away. So when I'm looking at straight ahead from my perspective uh does look as though there's some I've seen some white buildings that look as though they're they're in the water *** little bit more. I think we have to come around to the right *** little bit more of their T. V. I think. Yeah there and then up I think of I mean I may have lost track of oh there you are so oh yeah we're still around to the right more there john and right in there. Yeah that was the ones I was squatting at the front of the helicopter here. Yeah this is this is the most extensive I've seen but even here it looks as though the house looks like that has been built up doesn't it? Yeah so so this is probably because this is pretty close to the river. Um So this is an area house that probably has had um gone through this before and so the house is uh is built up more but as you can see trying to get in or out of that house today would be really difficult. So yeah there's *** there's *** lot of water around that house and then there's *** you know there's some outbuildings there on the left or maybe *** barn or something. Yeah so that water looks like it's *** few feet deep on the back side there and then if we come around to the right john there'll be *** home that has *** red it looks like *** red tile roof. Just *** little bit more around to the right right there and that one looks though it may be built up just *** little bit more so yeah that it has water close to it but it's on higher ground and that house you can get in and out of but um I'll bet there were *** little bit um *** little bit scared. Nice home pretty close to the river but the water came up but it doesn't look it looks as though it looks as though that property may have been built up as they built that house to keep it out of the water because they're they're pretty uh pretty close to all that. And yeah as as I'm as I'm looking out here as we look east it's *** bit easier now to see the um see where the river channel is, where it usually is. So yeah maybe if you come up *** little bit and then off to the right *** little bit more. Yeah so when you see that tree line, that's where the that's where the river usually is. Yeah so just yeah right in there and then it just kind of spills out now whether what you're seeing here is *** spillage from *** uh levee breach or just it just overtop the levee. Um You know it's it's tough to tell but *** lot of when we get the consumption that goes up this high and it crested over 16.5 ft up there in Michigan bar to the east of here. That's what they say happens. And this is the this is the usual thing that happens when it gets this high and it doesn't get this high very often I think it got this high in 06 and maybe in 17 and and in 97 when it was *** little bit higher. Um But yeah you do out here farther to the east to see *** better idea of where the channel is and where the levees are. And uh and the amount of the water uh Oh the road that just went right over here. Yeah. Yeah. I wonder what ah I don't know what road that is but yeah another road underwater. Oh and is that is that Wilton Road that's going across the the I think I think that might be at the top at the because I see ***. Yeah I think if you if you take so that roads underwater and then I think if you go diagonal up to the left on here I think that intersects with Wilton Road where it goes across the the river which is so come up uh and left *** little bit and where this road will t into that road that road that goes now away from you and up it goes across the river. I think that's Wilton road right there and that's where I was *** me tree was reporting from last night and couldn't get *** couldn't get across there and they were looked like they were reinforcing that that bridge last night there was *** bridge in there, like they were reinforcing that last night, they were worried about erosion or maybe they're already getting some erosion in there. So and I think that road was closed last night. I think I see, I can't tell is the traffic moving across that okay? I think that road was closed last night. So that's that's *** good sign that and that that prevented *** lot of people from getting into Wilton last night because we had the closer on Dillard and we had the closure here. So now at least that road is open and I think that's yeah that's Wilton Road right there, so and that's Sheridan on the other side. And it's it's always interesting because when we get this this Sheldon Sheldon, Right. Um So when um what what happens is with the uh we never see it on the flooding on that side, we always see it on on the south side here. Um So on the Wilton side of the casinos before, we don't see it on on the north side um on the Deer Creek. Sorry, Sure. Gotcha since uh since I am *** meteorologist. And let's talk about weather for *** second. We have, we have pretty good north wind and the other thing North wind does give us amazing visibility. I've heard, you know from where I am, I can see the sucker butte so I can see the sierra. It's just it's an amazing view in here and like up to three just and C forever but but JB is looking at more than barns and buildings that have some water in them. It does look as though the river is lower than it was in 97 maybe by *** foot or two. So we're seeing some water up to homes and around homes in 97. It was *** bit more extensive in homes. But then again there's also been other improvements done on the Cosumnes there um in areas east of of Wilton After the floods of 97 there were some changes that were made um agreements that were made if you will to have put *** low spot on the levee so that areas would be designed to flood in *** case like this. Um And so I'm sure that we're seeing some standing water south of the river in areas that are designed to and that helps take some of the pressure off of the areas downstream like in Wilton so that you don't get as much of the water that's coming out of Amador in El Dorado County once it passes michigan bar, there are some low spots in the levee that are designed flood points if you will. So that's one of the changes that was made after 97 But those are agreements that after he made so that you can you know if you're if you're the landowner say okay when it gets bad I'll have my land flooded. Yeah the the levee we're looking at here appears to be pretty intact and right. Yeah as I'm looking straight down here I can see I can see where the river is supposed to be. It's moving along in its channel just it's just really really muddy. Um ***. J. B. Is I'm looking straight down um I'm seeing *** some sort of earthmover down there. I don't know if that's if somebody's out there doing some work on *** levee or has been doing some work on *** levee. Yeah because that's the kind of thing that, oh actually john looks um behind us you see all those vehicles that are down there. They may be working on *** levee down there and actually it looks as though, yeah it looks as though part of it is caved. Yeah. Yeah. So so let's see what these vehicles are doing and you see that um So just past the past the this that little road and right there. Yeah that's that's that's that's part of *** levy the cave right there and you can see how it washed to the right there through the vineyard. But yeah that's so that's *** levee and it it's it's stuffed uh which meant that there was some water running through it um at some point probably last night when the water is *** little bit higher and when you saw those vehicles out there, they're probably um going to have to shore that up what they are gonna have to shore that. So that's probably what they're they're getting to work on right now. So when we heard about some levy failures or whatever, this is probably the type of thing that we're looking at. So what happens on some of these levees is they don't get tested very often and in the meantime you can see um how animals get in them and uh burrowing animals and you can suddenly get uh some water that starts creeping into them and as the water comes up the water finds these holes and it just starts eroding the levy from the inside. And it can uh just cause the the levy to slough *** little bit and it looks like that's what happened there and yeah, they're gonna get to work on that and get that fixed. It's on *** catastrophic levee failure, but it's *** it's something they want to get worked on. Yeah, that's that's pretty classic right there. So maybe one of the areas that we heard about and and what you see there on the left is where the river channel is, it's pretty clear to see the river channel uh you know, in this perspective as opposed to seeing the widespread water that we're seeing, you know, the the, the vineyard and the farm property that we're seeing on the north side of that has *** lot of standing water in it and it's from what happened last night. But yeah, that's, that's at least one levee repair that's gonna be going on here. Cool. Well, I was just, I was just thinking we could either go east or west. Let's go tell you what, let's go west because So let's go downstream on this and see where this water is going. So we know it's covered 99, we know it's covered Dillard road, but it's um, I want to see, yeah, let's go, let's go downstream. We'll go down toward the Twin cities area and then see what this is doing down toward I five. Um, I doubt this water is gonna impact I5, but since we're here and we can check it out, Let's, let's check it out. But as you can see from john shot here, that's just, it's just, so if you picture on the left side, that's the case, um, it's on the right side is where the deer creek is supposed to be, but in the middle is where we have both of them just kind of merged together in, in farmland now and uh, it's, it's, it's just kind of taken over. But this is the, this is the lower part of sacramento county and this is where the water just kind of accumulates down here. And, and you can also just tell from this terrain that it's so much flatter. Uh when, if you've been out toward rancher marietta Jackson Highway, that area, it's much more undulating and the water in that part of the Cosumnes River really moves along pretty quickly. But when you get down here, the water movement slows down and starts to pile up *** little bit more and then just spread out because it's tends to be pretty flat down here, beautiful farmland, but prone to flooding in cases like this. But again, you can kind of follow the tree line to see where the river usually is. Obviously it's and it's run its own course today. So what you're seeing going across the screen, that's, we're coming back up on Highway 99 and and and Dillard Road, that's Dillard Road that's going straight away from us and back into the back into the water. So yeah, because some of this kind of comes around from from the right to the left, it does *** little bit of *** curve here as it approaches 99 and then usually goes under 99 here around around Diller. But in *** case like this, the water just spreads out and and takes over Dillard and And Highway 99 and I'm not sure which road I'm seeing off to the left, the cars are driving through that, that's our know that might be our guy right there. Okay, that's okay. I bet you can. But yeah, so Arnold still has standing water out actually in two places actually, Yes, john, we ought to look at that because there's another place up here, I'm sitting on the left where the cars are more or less stopped. So that's yeah, that's that's gonna be our no there and there were some rescues that went on Arno last night as well last night and first thing this morning. So yeah, just in uh, you know, down, down from there, um closer to us, you see the cars right there that are going through the water? Yes, yeah, right in there. Yeah, Yes, that's that's that's our no road and I think again that water has receded *** little bit, I think it's easier to navigate because I think cars were swamped there earlier today. But yeah, that's that's that's our No, and they're kind of, yeah, they go through single file, they find the high spot in the middle of the road unless that Prius is uh it's stuck. But yeah, the, I'm not advising anybody do that, but if you have to do this, you, you find the high spot in the road which is usually in the middle and and if you're polite, you, you alternate that one, go one way and let the other one go the other way and hope that the car coming by is going too fast to swap your car, Give you much week. Yeah, that, that car right there is probably stalled, that's *** couple of cars stalled there. So that silver one, maybe that might be because that's off the side of the road, looks like it might have been swept out. That may have been where they had to do one of those rescues earlier today. Yeah, yeah, so this is when the, when the water was higher, that car got um got washed off the road and you can just kind of see that it it floated and was taken in the current and and and it's gone. Um you know, I think that that's probably one of those cases where earlier today they got people out safely but we didn't hear about rescues going on on Arno and that's probably one of them. Absolutely, So I'll be heading downstream on on this For Franklin Boulevard, which is between 99 and five. Yeah, we can't urge people enough to not drive on the roads out here. Um it's too many rescues last night and to hear that there still may be some going on now, just just don't just don't do it. Oh yeah, look at that, wow! Yeah, so get to *** certain point, you get off and you go back down the frontage road and then you then you head well no, you can't head east because so this is this is gonna be twin cities here and you can see twin cities underwater straight ahead of us, john you can get around to that in *** second because we're kind of heading parallel to that. But yeah there's *** spot here where twin cities goes underwater. So. No directly in front of us. Sorry about that john so we're yeah so this is twin cities that you see now and then see how it dips down and and there it goes underwater right there. So what you're looking at is twin cities road which runs between 99 and and um and five and um Yeah more cars here and submerged, swamped. Uh but they're you know more rescues here and this is the exact spot that there was *** dramatic rescue helicopter rescue from in 1997 it's this exact spot. Um And uh I don't know if there were any any helicopter rescues that had to be done here this time but but this is the first time this part of Twin Cities Road has gone under water. So what you're looking at is is twin cities underwater and more cars that were swamped and they're stuck there and it just you know you see the current that's where the that's where the river river is supposed to be on the other side but it just um it just sweeps it look at that. Yeah so we hope everybody get out of there okay. And then um yeah and then john eventually just keep going up on twin cities, there's *** home up there too that looks like it has *** lot of water around it to step up on the right side of the road, on the other side of those trees. So you can see here that the home is built up and it's dry and the barns in the water. So yeah this is an area that's that's flown to printing uh prone to flooding. This isn't the first time that this is uh this area has been under this much water and so it looks as though the home is okay and the cars are dry but the barns barn has *** lot of water in it. So it's on, it's on Twin Cities road and um there are other little roads out here that I'm seeing that you know I don't even know what they are but little roads that are impassible out here. So do we know any more about the oh I see, I can see the helicopter straight up straight ahead of us john um uh it's just about to cross Twin cities up ahead of us is where it must be the Sac Metro or the Sheriff's helicopter is and so we should find out what, okay and that's the Sheriff's helicopter. Okay and that's the franklin airport off the right okay. And so where would this Tahoe be? I see where they're circling. I'm just not seeing oh is that it right there do you think john yeah it looks like it and it also looks like it's near power lines. Oh my oh my honestly not not *** good way to start your year. And uh the other thing I'm seeing here is that uh franklin boulevard there there it's closed. Um at twin cities you have to get diverted off because franklin boulevard then goes underwater so that's what you're looking at. There is Twin cities road um near franklin and nice home side there and they're all surrounded by water and then there's there's *** barn in *** home there lots of water around it and again this is that's on the south side of Twin cities road and you can just see the current of the water just blowing through it from from north to south. Just hope so people are are safe in there or they're not home and then john if you can go up *** little bit you'll to your top side you'll see that will be franklin boulevard. And then um to the left is where franklin boulevard goes back under water right there. And uh yeah it's there's *** railroad track and then and then farther to the uh to the right is where their cars are getting turned at frank they're they're coming down franklin and they're getting turned on. Twin cities going to be west right there. Yeah so yeah this is *** it's gonna be tough to get around this part of the county for *** couple of days with some of these roads will be blocked for *** while. Do you have any update on our Tahoe do we do we wanna stick around for that? I think I see *** different helicopter off to the left that's that's still *** share Sure. Yeah there's there's *** lot of this going on and and you're you see you know cars that are stuck in cars that are getting through and I don't think you really really want to roll the dice, it just gets deeper and deeper, putting it more of *** wake water going into the engine compartment and you know and that's really deep. Yeah and and I know that the uh you know if you've driven through any sort of standing water, you know that the idea is you you want to keep some forward momentum but I think that's *** little bit too much. That's that's definitely water going into the engine compartment there, that's that's some deep water, that person's putting up some wake. I would not recommend this at all. Oh yep, is that ***, is that *** pickup truck? Okay? Yeah that's that water's pretty deep. Oh yeah you know the semi is gonna put up *** lot of, *** lot of wake. Yeah and so is the big rig gonna go or is he just gonna say say nana? No thank you, that's pretty deep there and and so you know from, from the, you know from the big perspective here um We probably have already seen the crest of this farther to the east, like in Wilton the high waters are highest water has already gone through and we've probably seen the highest water at 99. But that means that here we're probably still seeing the highest water that we're going to see right around now and and it will gradually very slowly recede, but it's that crest if you will, that, you know, starts in michigan bar and then makes its way down through slough house and down to Wilton down to 99 then eventually the I five um or into the delta. But so it's that crest and it's about um 18 to 24 hours to get from the michigan bar area to highway 99 then it's another few hours to get across highway 99 here toward franklin. So it said it's that that um that high point on the, on the graph if you will. And we saw the high point in michigan bar yesterday afternoon. Perfect, yep, yep, right there. Oh yeah. Oh yeah, And I'll bet they've been busy the last 24 hours. Alright, we can stick around for this and see how they extricate these people and try to get around these cars that are in big rig that's in front of them. Yeah, I wonder if they're saying you guys don't go forward? Oh and and and I think that I think that red car is stalled there, isn't it? And is the pickup truck stalled too? Or is it trying to get by? Yeah, yeah. Oh no, oh no, Oh no, oh no, this is *** mess. Oh, jeez, and so all these other cars are trying to get out of the way, so the emergency vehicle get through uh yes, it's *** total mess because you can't go off the side of the road because it just drops off into deeper water. So I think that white pickup has to back up and get behind the red car and let the emergency vehicle go through. There we go, kind of, no another vehicle is coming. So for those of you that are watching this, so we're this emergency vehicles trying to get to *** stalled vehicle that's down here in the deep water, Black Chevy Tahoe, that there's somebody in and uh so just really okay. Uh well, I was just bringing people up to date on what it is that we're looking at here, uh that um that so so there there are people that are stuck in that, in that Chevy Tahoe, and so there there were watching as uh as they're going to try to get these people to dry ground um but obviously they were driving driving down here, they got in the water and the car stalled out and there are people in there right now and they they uh they're in need of rescue and rescue is on the way, but trying to get the rescue vehicle down there was it was *** bit of *** mess with the other traffic that was backed up in here but I think they're they're on the way and and I guess now we have *** helicopter on the way to to that J. B. Maybe might have *** better view than I do but is it can I can just see *** driver, can you see more than that? Okay just just for reference dan, what what altitude are we flying at? And they're probably well they're gonna be down there at 500 or less. Okay okay all right okay so for those of you wondering I was just talking to dan Oppenheim, the pilot No no it just wasn't on my okay now I should be transmitting. Okay perfect. Huh? So I have the rescue helicopter insight, it's over the franklin airfield right now, it's about midfield. Oh I see him. There we go, okay you go, *** little left so he's he's about to go over the nine. There you go. Alright so let's see what they do here. So um dan do you think this would be *** hoist rescue most likely? Um It's either gonna be *** hoist or I would imagine *** dinghy of some sort but the helicopters here I'm expecting *** hoist rescue. Uh the only concern that I would have would be the wires and proximity to the to the Tahoe, yep there are power lines very close, which makes that uh more dangerous. And uh, and also we have, well at least the roads parallel with the wind. We have *** good north wind today, but the road is more or less parallel with that north wind. So don't have to worry about *** crosswind. Yeah, with high wind like this, it's easy for the helicopter to just face into the wind. And uh it looks like the hoist is on the right side, which is gonna be the same side as the wires, which is gonna give them just *** little and so that's what they're doing. They came down from the north to the south now they're turning back into the north which is into the wind and you can see from their shadow, just how low they are flying to assess the situation here and they very well might decide that using *** voice is not necessarily ideal and they might request *** vote. That's what I would think. You know, just to me that would be uh easier than the and the hoist, you know? Yeah. I almost wonder if they're just gonna give him *** push. Thank you. Put the car in neutral and just push him to where uh no, nope, nope. They're getting out. It looks like the driver's door just opened. Oh yeah, I still have the helicopter. Yeah. You know, I, yeah, well, I also just, I'm just, I'm just wondering if maybe they also have *** might have *** child and the child seat in the back too because I know if it was me and my car got stuck like that, I'd be like, okay, water's knee deep or whatever. I'm wade my way. I but but if I had *** child in the back, I obviously wouldn't be wanting to do that. So is that the driver that's out the sunroof? Yeah. Is the helicopter still circling there dan, The helicopter is still circling. They're making *** really wide orbit so it doesn't look like they're going to be participating. They're just observing what it looks like. Okay, so you know, After talking with the Cosumnes fire folks today that we were with 99 and then watching this, it's it's never ending. The list of things that our firefighters are called to do on any given day, yep, yep. And and they're in and appears though that was the only person in there, no need for *** hoist. And uh and they're happy to be out of there and don't worry about the car and another day yeah, they are all right. It looks like I five is going along nicely, there's water that goes under it. So it doesn't look as though I five is likely going to be impacted by this because I'm just kinda looking around here, you just close up the hatch for them. How thoughtful, very thoughtful. So yeah JB is as well. I was just uh looking at my window, so so we look over to I five and traffic is going along nicely on five and the water water goes under um if you go to the left *** little bit, john, you'll see the, you see where the main channel of the river goes right underneath I five right there and so you know, that's, that's where the river is supposed to be, you can see it spreads out, it's pretty close to I five, but I don't think we're gonna get any of the lane closures on five, that's the water's pretty high underneath there, but um I don't think we're gonna get *** case like we saw On 99 where the road gets closed, but that's that's some high water out there, So that's good news, that's so with with 99 close, it's nice to have five as the alternative and it doesn't look as though it's going to be impacted by, by flooding, which is great. But yeah, the water out here that we're seeing is it's going to be out here for *** couple of days, it's only gonna slowly go away, but where we are right now uh just to the east of I five, they're probably seeing the highest water they're going to see right around now and over the next few hours and then we'll just kind of slowly recede over the next couple of days, but the roads that we've been looking at like like Twin Cities and Dillard, Arno and New Hope is down here somewhere um Although those roads are gonna be underwater for for *** while and they're impassable and we advise you not to use them, you do have someone hanging out at the fire company and it looks like the emergency vehicle is backing up the road where they came so it's quite possible. I think they're going to who transfer the victim into the buy *** helicopter, interesting. Oh, that looks like it's someone's yard, but at least it's dry and then just back slowly, it's, it's so disorienting when you don't know where the side of the road is? So just easy does it? It also appears as the pickup trucks that we saw past that Tahoe earlier made it to the intersection and then it got stuck, meaning there are likely, Yeah, and it's, you know, it's nice that we do have *** clear day out here because you know, you can just imagine how much more dangerous these rescues would be if it was still windy and stormy, like it was yesterday. Um Yeah, is that somebody sitting on top or is that just somebody in there and that's like their backpack on the top? No, now they're getting out of the sun, Should we tell the, yep, and that's just it, You and john you saw this the other day, vehicle goes through, they think they're through and then the vehicle stalls out, What was that friday on upon Keefer and now this person needs to get rescued. Yeah at the tv the fire personnel just have to be I just wanted to bring it to your attention. I don't know if you guys austin at this point because they were doing rescues and then um and then borderline exasperated because it's the same thing. Gotcha. I just wanted to make sure that you knew that he was the 1500 for you. Just just it doesn't uh it doesn't pay. I mean it's we're watching vehicles go around and and dry areas getting through there, get to their place with their vehicles intact and not like this and that that car is not salvageable sadly. I'm not surprised. Yeah that was yeah there was *** body in that other submerged vehicle. Yeah but that um so Mark. I know you are not listening to the helicopter frequency but um Just spoke to fire copter one which is on the ground over there. They're going to oh one second. Yeah we sure are. Thank you. Um They are going to try to do *** boat rescue or walk that person out of that white pickup and if they cannot do that then they'll do *** hoist rescue using the helicopter over there wow. Yeah. Do you see *** I don't see *** vehicle that has *** boat or upon it right around the area right now I do not but it also seems like if that person is safe. Yeah and uninjured then getting them out in *** timely fashion might not be their top priority. Might be waiting for *** while. But man yeah, that's just and this water is, is gonna stay high for *** while. This is probably as high as it's going to get. But it's um just this is just, it's good to be exasperating from these these these firefighters. So there's the vehicle that they took the first person out of the Tahoe looks like they're talking to the property owner and there's the helicopter so chopper just took off again. I know right? Yeah, I would think that the hoist rescue would be their um their their last resort. I mean it seems like the riskiest, don't you think completely agreed. It is not *** simple task. They have wires directly in front of that vehicle, so voice rescue and the best of circumstances can be incredibly effective and efficient for what it is, but it's not something that they're eager to do. If it's not completely necessary, yep, it's just, it's just over to the other side. Okay, looks like they're gonna land, let someone off and see if they can walk *** person. That makes sense. Yeah. They said they were going to see if they could walk the person. I think that that land wasn't all that dry for them if it's too soft to land them. Yeah that road's there, that road's impassable. No, sadly the driver didn't know that until they it's really easy for us to look down, be well aware that that's not gonna help the situation, but they do not know that unfortunately. So now they're pointing the helicopter back into the wind but between so so is he gonna is he trying to put *** couple of skids down on that little dry just enough to get someone out possibly and he's dangerously close to wires? I mean in my perspective it was good About one rotor diameter. Uh huh. Which I mean if you look up right now you can see the edge of our rotor disc and that's the level of precision that helicopters can use. I mean the pilot can look out, is aware exactly where the rotor disk is in relation to instructions. Alright, so we let this this this person out to wait out there and try to help this guy out of that white white truck and he's not sure where the the highest ground is between here and there. Yeah, no, and and you know, and it's by the side of the road and you know how the sides of the road are there? That yeah, exactly, the drainage is on the side of the road. Yeah, so this is *** good pairing. There we go. Yeah, yep, just what we're afraid of. Yeah, yeah, yep. And another factor is that these rescuers, I don't know how many hours they've been working today but I know that the helicopter crew mentioned in passing over the radio that they were Out at 4:30. Yeah. Yeah and this isn't the first one they've had to do today and this is it's *** it's *** long day and and and they've been doing this countless times today alright sounds good. We will definitely be keeping an eye on you. They're going to try *** hoist rescue there potentially walking the victim down to they said to the south and then and then hoisting from there I can't actually see the helicopter, it's in my blind spot. It's to the it's it's to the left yep okay and that yeah that four firefighters just in there in *** nasty spot. So in *** case like this since they already have the firefighter on the ground and if they're going to do *** hoist r. Is the I take it the person on the ground is going to assist with the hoist and help the person get get hooked up in that sort of thing provided they can get over to the person. Otherwise when they do *** hoist what they might do is send an attendant down from the helicopter retrieve the victim but then the rescuer on the ground is very familiar with the equipment so he will not need that attendant necessarily to descend down again they can just lower *** cable to him and he'll be able to attach himself. Gotcha, But in all likelihood they will not have *** victim attach himself without some amount of supervision. Gotcha, wow. And the other submerged vehicles we see there. I guess those people did get out, we're able to walk out when their cars got submerged and maybe those vehicles have been there for six hours, we don't know. And then this the white car went by and got stuck and we have somebody in there, not the way to spend *** sunday afternoon. And yeah, there's just there's no way good way out of their water on every road as soon as the victim lifts in the helicopter, there's *** fence between the driver and the rescuer. Oh, okay. There are several fences reporting that there are multiple fences between the driver and the rescuer that are completely submerged. You cannot see barbed wire. Yeah, yep, that makes that makes sense. So yeah, just putting the rescuer into harm's way. Yes. And the combination of barbed wires and strong current barbed wire that you cannot see in strong current. It's just *** recipe for danger. Exactly. Yeah, I think that's gonna be the best way mark. Just checking in how you doing. I'm doing good. Okay. Yeah, absolutely. Oh yeah, I'm I'm I'm doing fine. I'm, you know, the view up here is uh is amazing if you, you know, just look at the what an amazing day it is up here with the beautiful visibility, um you know, the flooding is, is uh, it's for me talking about flooding, talking about the Cosumnes River and, and you know, numbers and graphs and that sort of thing. It's nice to put it all in perspective from, from the air and even being on the ground by it earlier today. That's one perspective, but seeing it from the air is uh, is really uh educational for me. Um, it's uh, it really helps me to understand better how all this water is flowing and the, and then seeing these rescues that are going on, being able to witness it firsthand instead of, and the, the, uh, what, what the firefighters go through and, you know, we talked about the, okay, they, it was kind of *** daring, daring, probably not for them, but *** daring what it looked like landing just to find some dry spot to be able to get that person on the ground and then they, you know, we, we see them get in the water and they, you know, encountering the fences and deep holes of water and um, so it's just what, what the firefighters and the rescuers go through that we, you know, we don't really see, we don't understand when, when we're, when we're at home watching on television, we don't know what it took for those rescuers to get to the place to rescue somebody and the hours that they go through and never mind the training, they go through to prepare themselves for daylight today. But yeah, this is um this is this is amazing perspective of this. Sorry? Um I just heard from the fire copter, one that they are not able to do *** hoist because of the proximity to the wires, they cannot get him across the road due to wires. So they are going to wait and when *** boat is available, they will bring in *** boat. But this person might be here for some time. Alright, well, I think, I think that's I think that's what we should do. I don't think we have to wait for this. Yeah, it's gonna be quite *** while, so um and and it would've been nice to see them rescue, but alright, we will stick around for just *** moment. And uh yeah, so I wish them the best and I know that they're they're going to are going to hoist their rescuer out. Oh, so if we stick around and we'll get to see the Alright, let's let's do that because he can walk back over right or I am not sure where they are going to do it. But um they've opted for *** hoist for the rescuer instead of landing and having them walk, don't you? I do my nose there, maybe half *** mile, *** little bit right to the right, *** little bit more, *** little bit more, keep going there, There you go. So yeah, he's banking around coming from the north pass the pass the road and then uh past the power lines and then oh the so I can see the guy on the ground, he's gotten over to that dry ground where they left him off, But when they left him off they didn't do *** complete landing, they covered with one on the ground, so it's easier to get out than to get in that way. Is that what you're saying? Alright, well we might be able to see *** hoist rescue anyway, even if it's just ever rescuer. Exactly, this is what they do all their training for. That's right, and it's it's interesting, you know sometimes dan when you're up flying and europe over Folsom Lake, I've seen it up over Folsom Lake, is that uh some day uh you know it's *** quiet news day, it's quiet weather day and europe flying over like I said Folsom Lake and these helicopters will be out there and they'll be doing the training, sometimes they're doing water drops and sometimes they're doing um they're dropping people on the ground and and you know they do their training yeah for aviation, there's *** busy season but it's *** year round job. So yeah, you know you think about the helicopters that are involved in firefighting and then on days like today with uh with water rescues going on, so looks like he's making *** wide circle off to the west and then trying to come in from the south. But the rescuer is on dry land about where they dropped him off, we'll see how this this whole list operation goes dan. Do you know off the top of your head from about what altitude they usually do *** hoist. It really just depends on the instructions lower is better. Uh you don't necessarily need to be incredibly high so if they have *** big open area that's just not suitable for landing because it's too soggy then they're probably gonna get pretty low, yep. And then what they'll do is the, remember on the skid is going to maneuver the cable directly to the rescuer on the ground okay? You know dan I'm enjoying being in live up to three as in in live up to three. You couldn't coerce me to be out on the skid on live up to three. Well we have doors attached so please keep your hands and feet inside. Absolutely. But honestly the versatility and maneuverability of helicopters. What you're, what what you're seeing right now is what really sparked my interest in flying really? That's true. So so the firefighter on the on the skid has the hoist in their hand, right? Yes, they have the cable and the control for it. The hoist is actually controlled by the person in the back and that person is working along with the pilot, fine tune location. They're gonna say okay move forward, move left and they'll guide them into exactly where they need to be, you can see the cables being lowered. Did he just catch that? Not yet, okay and he's already wearing *** harness or that sort of thing so he does not need much time, he's just gonna flip it onto himself okay? And they will be on their way and there he goes. There they go, yeah way back. Oh they know they're on camera, I've been talking to them, They'll be on the 5:00 News I can guarantee. So are they gonna bring him in? Are they gonna bring him over to some dry ground or clear? They'll likely bring him in but helicopters are *** lot more stable with *** little bit of forward air speed and so that's why as soon as he was appropriately attached the helicopter started to move, they move on. This has been *** really enjoyable flight to get the perspective of this flooding today. It's always nice when we can bring people on board, you get *** better idea of what we do and how it, how it looks, our limitations as well as capabilities and and as as I'm always paying attention to the weather parameters that you're dealing with on *** daily basis to, you know whether it's visibility when it's uh it's tricky, yep, wow. So yeah, you know, as we were talking about on the air this morning, on the, on the west slope, we had 6 to 10 inches of rain and parts of El Dorado and Placer County and, and gravity just takes it down and it gets down here into the valley floor and it just spreads out and um and the great thing about this is, I mean, as as awful as these cars under waters of his homes that have water near or in them is um, this standing water out here does, does percolate down and it helps to recharge our, our groundwater to some extent. So it's, it is, well, this has been ***, *** very big storm for us, it's obviously *** beneficial one as well. We've seen significant increases on Folsom Lake, we've seen significant increases on our other reservoirs. Uh, so this is uh, this has been, this is helpful after years of drought, not saying we're out of the drought yet, but this is, this is, this is the way we get out of all this water. Yeah, we are, we are definitely going in the right way, but the thing that I'm afraid of is, you know, last year is still too little too fresh in my memory. It's uh what's, what's interesting is that *** year ago today, we actually had more rain in sacramento that we've had so far this year, I think last year, at this point we had like 14 inches of rain and this year *** little over 10 were obviously way above average, but last year we were further above average and then we went really dry in january, february and March. And so what we um you know what, we don't need maybe more storms with the same magnitude of what we just had thursday through saturday. We definitely do need to get more rain and more sierra snow between now and april and to help fill those reservoirs even more. By the time we get to the uh you know the March or april and may the flooded dairy right off our right side. Oh yeah cows are in the water. Alright. Do we need to make any stops on the way home? Can you go, can you go through in and out? I'll just land on the roof. I think you can hop out. No, I think we're good to go from the Executive. It'd be great to get it to go order from *** from *** drive through, just drop *** hoist and just have them put it in there and just take it out

KCRA 3 Chief Meteorologist Mark Finan surveys 2023 New Year's Day flooding in Sacramento County from LiveCopter 3

LiveCopter 3 footage captured water rescues of motorists stranded in floodwaters. It also showed damage to homes and a levee.

KCRA 3 Chief Meteorologist Mark Finan joined LiveCopter 3 on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2023, to view flooding in parts of Sacramento County by air.

He provided context for the dramatic images of inundated areas in Wilton, Twin Cities, along Highway 99 and at other parts of southern unincorporated Sacramento County.

The footage captured water rescues of motorists stranded in floodwaters. It also showed damage to homes and a levee. Some homes that were raised escaped the damage.

Rescues in flooded roadways can be dangerous

LiveCopter 3 showed the efforts of first responders to attempt a rescue of a man trapped in his vehicle. KCRA 3 pilot Dan Oppenheim learned that conditions were too dangerous for a helicopter rescue and that barbed wire submerged in the water made access on foot difficult as well.
