Sacramento Children's Home - The Letter
What I have found as a caregiver and as a teacher is that every teen needs to know that there are some adults in their corner. I was first introduced to The Source because I had teenagers that were going to counseling at the Sacramento Children's home, and so they would give us that number for a way to actually locally have the support when a teen is in distress. What is the crisis? What's happening to you right now? Are you safe? Are you in a safe area? When I wrote the letter to the employees at the Source, I really wanted to articulate for them how thankful I was that there is that resource for caregivers to the staff of the source. I'm writing because I'd like to say thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you for being there for all of our teenagers when they are struggling with a mental health issue. As a parent. Foster parent. And educator. Often feel surrounded and sometimes overwhelmed with the mental health needs of the teens in my life. Although I have access to psychologists and therapists, as well as social workers. I have been using The Source crisis line over the past few years to add another layer of support. This has especially been helpful because other support options aren't always available during the times when teenagers tend to have their mental health breakdown. It seems like 11 p.m. on Friday night is always the time. Is always the time. We need someone to support a teen. The best support that I have found with your service was when I recently discovered that you would send someone to the house for a wellness check. Even if it was late in the evening. Although my teen wasn't very open to extended support. She had allowed the visit and that helped to de-escalate the situation. And I was able to feel that my teen was no longer in danger of hurting herself that evening. Your visit was able to keep the teen from being taken to the E.R., which Might have resulted in hospitalization at a mental health facility. I've had multiple situations where hospitalization was the result of a mental health breakdown. Except for supporting a teen with medication when needed. I have found that hospitalization has not helped. Rather, it often adds another layer of stress on the teen due to the acting out of other teens at the facility. My goal is to keep it teen safe and avoid hospitalization if possible. While providing the support they need through various options. I look to The Source to create an option where teenagers are able to connect with a worker, peer counselor in a less threatening environment. Such as the home when they are struggling to stay safe due to mental health concerns. My teen has used the source phone and text options when she needed someone to talk to about her struggles. I can give my students and their parents the phone number to The Source so that they might also have that option. Thanks again for all you do to support our teens. Rosalee Hagstrom. Wow, what a great letter. It's really nice, actually. I'm incredibly emotional right now because I love the work that I do here at The Source. It feels good reading this because in this work we don't do it for the thank you's and we definitely don't get instant gratification. And so to get a letter like this and to go to read it and have someone be able to reach back and let us know how we've helped it. It gives me the motivation to keep doing this work and it's incredibly touching. I feel like in the future, not only can I lean on The Source, but I'm now promoting The Source. The letter helped me to kind of focus on why that service is so important.
