Most of Yosemite Valley closed due to flooding concerns
BE PLAYED IN SACRAMENTO ON SUNDAY. THE NBA HAS NOT RELEASED THAT START TIME YET. LISA: THE OTHER BIG STORY WE’RE FOLLOWING -- MOST OF YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK WILL CLOSE STARTING TONIGHT BECAUSE OF THE POTENTIAL FOR FLOODING. LIVE COPTER THREE IS OVER YOSEMITE RIGHT NOW WITH A VIEW YOU’LL SEE ONLY HERE ON KCRA 3. YOU CAN SEE HOW GORGEOUS IT IS. THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAS ISSUED A FLOOD WATCH FOR YOSEMITE RAPID SNOWMELT COULD CAUSE FLOODING ALONG RIVERS, CREEKS, AND STREAMS. TY: PEOPLE WERE OUT EARLIER TODAY TAKING IN ALL THE SPECTACULAR VIEWS. PARK OFFICIALS SAY, THE CLOSURE WAS A HARD DECISION, BUT VISITORS’ SAFETY IS THEIR TOP PRIORITY. THEY SAY THE CLOSURE WILL LAST UNTIL AT LEAST NEXT WEDNESDAY. THEY SAY THEY’RE HOPING FOR THE BEST BUT PREPARING FOR THE WORST. >> WE’RE FEELING CONFIDENT WITH THE PLAN WE HAVE. LOTS OF MEETINGS GOING, GOOD CONNECTION WITH NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE, TEAM OF ALL SORTS OF PEOPLE. IT’S ALL HANDS ON DECK. TY: RESERVATIONS FOR LODGING AND CAMPGROUNDS IN EASTERN YOSEMITE VALLEY WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE CANCELED AND REFUNDED. THE ENTIRE PARK WILL NOT BE CLOSED. WAWONA, MARIPOSA GROVE, HETCH HETCHY, AND WESTERN YOSEMITE VALLEY WILL BE OPEN. LISA: LET’S GO BACK OUT TO LIVE COPTER 3. CHIEF METEOROLOGIST MARK FINAN IS FLYING IN CHOPPER TODAY FOR US. MARK, HOW DOES IT LOOK FROM UP THERE? IT IS AWE-INSPIRING. >> IT IS AMAZING. SOMEBODY IS THE PERFECT TESTBED TO SHOW THE SNOWMELT IN PROGRESS AND THE IMPACT IT IS HAVING. THIS IS YOSEMITE CREEK. THERE IS A LOT OF WATER COMING DOWN. THIS JUST ONE OF A NUMBER OF CREEKS THAT FEEDS INTO THE MERCED RIVER. THAT IS WHY WE HAVE LED ISSUES. THAT IS MORE OF YOSEMITE FALLS GOING INTO LOWER YOSEMITE FALLS, BUT ONLY VALLEY FLOOR, YOU CAN SEE THE MEADOWS. THIS IS WHERE THE MERCED RIVER IS. THERE IS A FAIR AMOUNT OF WATER IN THERE. THE MERCED RIVER IS COMING UP AND GOING OUT. THE MEADOWVIEW YOU ARE LOOKING AT THERE IS PART OF THE AREA IS GOING TO BE CLOSED. THE AREAS IN THE CENTER OF THE YOSEMITE VALLEY AWARE WE ARE GOING TO BE SEEING THE CLOSURE. THE AREAS REGULARLY 70 FALLS, THOSE ARE -- RIGHT BELOW YOSEMITE FALLS, THOSE ARE THE AREAS THAT ARE GOING TO BE CLOSE. BUT THIS IS GREAT TO SEE THE SNOWMELT IN PROGRESS. THE FLOODING WE ARE TALKED ABOUT AND POTENTIAL FOR FLOODING IS ON THE MERCED RIVER. YOU HAVE ALL THE SNOWMELT IN, BUT YOU ALSO HAVE THE STREAMS AND CREEKS EATING INTO IT. -- HEATING INTO IT. YOU GET EVERYTHING FEEDING INTO ONE OF RIVER AND THAT IS HOW CAN SEE THE MERCED RIVER COMING UP QUICKLY. AS OF EARLIER TODAY, THE RIVER HAS MEASURED DOWNSTREAM, AT THE ENTRANCE TO VALLEY, IT WAS ABOUT NINE FEET IT IS SCHEDULED TO HIT 11 FEET BY SUNDAY. IS WHEN YOU SEE AREAS LIKE SWINGING BRIDGE GO ALMOST UNDERWATER. AS WE GO PAST HALF DOME AND DO LOOKUP, -- YOU LOOK OUT, YOU CAN SEE HOW MUCH SNOW THERE IS. IF YOU GO UP AROUND 9000 OR 11,000 FEET, THE MEASURING GAUGES ARE SAYING THERE IS STILL 10 TO 15 FEET OF SNOW DEPTH. THE SNOW MELT WILL GO ON FOR A WHILE. TWO APPEARS AROUND -- THE SNOW UP HERE IS AROUND 8800 FEET. PARTS OF YOSEMITE VALLEY ARE CLOSED THIS WEEKEND. WE WILL SEE THIS SO ABOUT -- THIS SNOWMELT GO ON FOR MONTHS TO COME. IF YOU PLAN TO VISIT IN JUNE OR JULY, YOU WILL CONTINUE TO SEE THE FALLS LOW WELL INTO THE SPRING -- FLOW WELL INTO THE SPRING AND SUMMER. IT IS SPECTACULAR APPEAR. LISA: THAT GIVES US GOOD PERSPECTIVE, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU SEE ALL THAT SNOW THAT IS GOING TO BE MELTING. IT IS AMAZING TO SEE THAT FROM THIS VANTAGE POINT. IS ANYTHING SURPRISE GIVE UP THEIR? -- HAS ANYTHING SURPRISED YOU UP THERE? >> ONLY THE NUMBER OF TIMES I HAVE SAID, "WOW." TY: WE ARE DOING THAT, TOO. LISA: EVERY SHOT IS SO SPECTACULAR. >> WE ARE FAMILIAR WITH A LOT OF THESE WATERFALLS, BUT THERE ARE SO MANY YOU DO NOT SEE WHEN YOU ARE HERE THAT YOU CAN SEE FROM THE AIR. THEY WILL CONTINUE TO FLOW IS WELL. OUR PILOT HAS BEEN SHOWING US SOME OF THE OTHER WATERFALLS AS WELL. IT IS AMAZING BUT ALSO GREAT FROM THIS PERSPECTIVE. THE YOSEMITE VALLEY IS WHERE EVERYTHING DRAINS TO. WHEN YOU’RE UP HERE, YOU GET THE IDEA OF HOW MUCH SNOW THERE IS AND HOW MUCH WILL DRAIN INTO THE MERCED RIVER, WHICH WILL EVENTUALLY GO DOWNSTREAM INTO THE RESERVOIR. IT IS SO NICE TO SEE THE SETBACK AND SOME OUT HAPPENING IN SUCH A COMPACT AREA. TY: WHAT H STREET. -- WHAT A TREAT.
