Sacramento Republic FC’s star captain Rodrigo “RoRo” López successfully underwent surgery to repair the rectus tendon in his right leg, the soccer club announced on Friday. The operation was performed by UC Davis Health sports medicine specialist Dr. Brian Haus. López has been on the inactive list since being substituted in the 83rd minute of the Republic’s April 22 match against Detroit City FC because of an on-field injury. Republic went on to win 1-0 and has continued its streak of being undefeated so far this season both in league play and at the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament. Republic leads its USL Championship Western Conference and is tied for the most points in the league overall. After having recently defeated regional rival Oakland Roots SC 1-0 in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup, the team will next take on its first upper-division Major League Soccer team of the 2023 tournament on Tuesday. The U.S. Open Cup, which dates back to 1913 as the oldest competition in U.S. soccer, is similar to cup competitions in Europe where smaller clubs compete with those from the biggest teams. The winning club gets $300,000 and a berth in the 2024 Concacaf Champions League.Last year, Republic beat three Major League Soccer teams before losing to a fourth, Orlando City SC, in the final.On Tuesday, the club will take on the Colorado Rapids in the round of 32 at Cal Expo's Heart Health Park starting at 7:30 p.m. As an enticement for fans, the club is offering $5 draft beers from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
