Behind the Scenes: California State Fair rides inspected before opening weekend
Preparations at the California State Fair are underway to ensure everyone's safety.
Inspectors went through the rides Thursday, checking for any operation errors.
Rides are inspected as soon as they come off the truck, well before they're even built.

"Some of those components are completely hidden once the ride has been set up, that’s the importance of coming in a week prior to the fair," said Allen Scanlan, an independent amusement ride inspector.

Each ride takes about 30 minutes to an hour to inspect and must be permitted by the state of California.
"Basically just watching the operator push the buttons to start the ride and see if the ride is running at the correct speed," Scanlan said.
While Cal Expo is working to ensure rides are safe and fun, Scanlan says there are things you can do to help keep you and your family safe.

"Any and everybody that comes out here, I ask them to please read the safety guidelines. Every ride has safety guidelines on the front of it. Read those and comply with it," Scanlan said.
If a ride is properly taken care of, it provides fun for generations.
"If it's built right and maintained right, they can last. It's like anything mechanical, if you take care of it will last a long time," Scanlan said.
