Every day Dwayne Wilson finds himself surrounded by a gift that keeps on giving.

Wilson works at the Vitalant Laboratories in Mather packing blood and platelets and it's a job he puts all his heart into.

"Just walking in the door, you always feel that connection as far as donors and what they've done and what they are doing," Wilson said.

As a teenager, Wilson was diagnosed with chronic heart disease and told at some point in life he'd need a transplant.

"Over time it's not something that gets better of course,” Wilson added. “It just gets worse."

Two years ago, Wilson's heart gave out forcing him to leave his career as an NBA equipment manager behind. That's when his doctor said it was time.

"[To] tell you the truth I was ecstatic,” Winson said. “I said let's do this.”

On April 18, 2021, Wilson was given a new lease on life.

"From day one I never felt better,” Wilson added. “Just the difference in the heartbeat. I never felt a heart like that."

The donation isn't lost on him.

"What people do for others is amazing,” he said. “My joy now is letting people know that if you’re donating this is what you are doing it for."

He includes the strangers who donated the seven bags of blood during his surgery.

"I'm the fruits of your labor," Wilson added.
