Rossen Reports: New IRS rules on Venmo and PayPal, do you have to report income?
Last year – the IRS announced it would be shaking up the rules for third-party payment platforms. This means those of us who use those apps for gig work or for selling things – would be expecting a new 1099-k form in the mail…but many of us are still waiting for it. Let’s talk about these 1099-K forms.
The new rule – was SUPPOSED to be – that if you got more than $600 on apps like PayPal and Venmo…you’d have to report that on those forms. But the IRS says – they’re pulling back on that. It needs more time to work out the details between – getting money sent to you by a roommate versus the money you’re making through SELLING things. So for right now – if you’ve made at least $20,000 and had more than 200 transactions on an app – then you’ll get that form.
But for NEXT year – that threshold WILL come down and sort of meet in the middle – to $5,000. So even though that threshold is so high for this year – at $20,000 — it WILL come down to $5,000 when you file next year. So if you’re selling anything from concert tickets on Ticketmaster, to furniture on Facebook Marketplace – or if you’ve got a side gig that pays you on an app…make sure you’re keeping track of next year’s taxes.
