Sacramento Republic FC will have another shot at a "cupset" at home against a Major League Soccer team when they take on the Seattle Sounders next in the U.S. Open Cup. The match will take place Tuesday, July 9 at 8 p.m. at Cal Expo's Heart Health Park. Republic secured its spot in the quarterfinals by beating the San Jose Earthquakes at home, just as the team did in the U.S. Open Cup back in 2022. This year, Sacramento won 4-3 after scoring two goals in the final 15 minutes of extra time. Sacramento's club is in the USL Championship, one level behind MLS. Back in 2022, Republic FC beat three MLS teams before losing to another, Orlando SC, in the final. The team has never played a U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal at home and has only taken on Seattle once before. In the 2018 U.S. Open Cup round of 32, Republic beat the Sounders 2-1 in extra time.
