'A lot of people coming in both for treatment and for vaccination': COVID-19 cases rise in California
COVID-19 is surging again as President Biden announced he tested positive for the virus.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said a significant marker is the amount of COVID-19 detected in wastewater, which has reached high levels for the first time this summer.
California is one of seven states with very high COVID-19 levels.
"We're seeing a lot of people coming in both for treatment and for vaccination and for testing," said Clint Hopkins, CEO of Pucci's Pharmacy.
Hopkins said he's been having many patients with COVID-like symptoms in his pharmacy, claiming that he's hearing people are more sick with this new strain of COVID than they were in the past. He calls it a "summer wave."
"It is a master masquerader. It just continues to find new ways to develop, new ways to evade the immune system. And so as these new variants come out, they are just slightly different than previous strains. It's harder for our body to fight them," said Dr. Vanessa Walker the chief medical executive for Sutter Roseville Medical Center.
Walker said that with every new variant comes a rise in cases. She's now stressing the importance of staying proactive by wearing masks, staying home when sick, and getting vaccinated.
Symptoms with this new variant have been pretty consistent with previous COVID-19 symptoms, with many people who test positive having a cough, nasal congestion and a sore throat.
Obtaining exact numbers from Sutter Health is a challenge because it is no longer mandatory to report positive tests.
"I think one easy way to think about it is, every time you see somebody who's complaining that they have a cold, they probably have a 30% to 40% chance that they truly have COVID. So if you got 10 people in a room with sniffles, three to four of them have COVID-19, that's kind of the numbers that we're looking at right now," said Walker.
As far as vaccines go, both Walker and Hopkins agree that you're better off with a shot than without.
"Getting a vaccine may not protect you against the current strain 100%, but it's going to give you the best protection that we have available. I encourage anyone who hasn't been vaccinated to come out and get a vaccine," said Hopkins.
Hopkins said Pucci's Pharmacy has plenty of COVID tests for those seeking one.
They have a scheduling tool to set up appointments on their website. You can click here to access it.
In addition, they have over-the-counter tests.
