Northern California Democrats in competitive Congressional races sidestep Biden question
As dozens of Democratic lawmakers call for Joe Biden to bow out of the presidential race, Democratic candidates running in competitive congressional races in Northern California are so far not willing to say if he should.
Three races in the region are being closely watched by both parties and could help determine the balance of power in Congress.
In California's House District 9, Democratic Rep. Josh Harder is working to hold onto his seat representing the San Joaquin Valley. Harder faces Republican challenger and Stockton Mayor, Kevin Lincoln.
At an event in Manteca earlier this week, Harder did not directly answer the question when KCRA 3 asked if he would call for Biden to drop out anytime soon.
"We're focused on our race right now," Harder said. "I haven't heard a lot of folks in our area who are concerned about what's going on in D.C."
In California's House District 3, along the eastern part of the state, Democratic candidate Jessica Morse is trying to unseat Republican Rep. Kevin Kiley.
Morse did not directly answer the question but provided KCRA 3 a statement.
"We need to stop Donald Trump at every level," Morse said. "Regardless of what happens at the top of the ticket, Congress must be the firebreak against the existential threat of MAGA extremism, and what I can do is unseat Kevin Kiley, one of Trump's foot soldiers right here in Roseville."
In California's House District 13, Democratic candidate and former State Assemblyman Adam Gray is hoping for redemption after narrowly losing the seat to Republican Rep. John Duarte last cycle. Gray's campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
More than 30 Democratic U.S. lawmakers have reportedly called for Biden to step aside, five of them so far are from California. That includes Rep. Adam Schiff (who is running for U.S. Senate), Rep. Mike Levin, Rep. Scott Peters, Rep. Jared Huffman, and Rep. Zoe Lofgren.
