'Business as usual' expected at California Capitol during Democratic National Convention
With hundreds of proposed laws to get through amid Democratic excitement around Kamala Harris' presidential nomination, California's legislative leaders confirmed Wednesday that the Democratic National Convention is not expected to impact work at the state Capitol later this month.
Gov. Gavin Newsom's campaign confirmed the governor will attend the convention. Several other state lawmakers are also slated to travel for the major event.
Regardless, Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas' office and Senate Pro Tem Mike McGuire's office said capitol business will proceed as usual that week of August 19, when the convention begins.
McGuire's office confirmed seven state senators will head to Chicago for the convention and will be excused for 48 hours.
The Pro Tem's office confirmed the Senate's former leader, Toni Atkins (San Diego), will lead the group. The other Democratic senators include Nancy Skinner (Berkeley), Lola Smallwood-Cuevas (Los Angeles), Steven Bradford (Los Angeles), Josh Becker (Menlo Park), Aisha Wahab (Fremont) and Caroline Menjivar (Van Nuys).
"A small delegation of Senators will attend the Democratic National Convention, where our fellow Californian, Vice President Kamala Harris, will break another glass ceiling as the first woman of color to become the Democratic nominee for President of the United States," McGuire said in a statement. "This momentous event is a historic opportunity that is good for California, good for our nation, and good for all those who support equality, freedom, and Democracy.”
Rivas' office told KCRA 3 earlier this week that the Assembly also plans on sending a group that will be excused for two days.
The group will be lead by the Assembly's majority leader Cecilia Aguiar-Curry. it includes Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, Mia Bonta, Sabrina Cervantes, Mike Fong, Chris Holden, Jacqui Irwin, Evan Low, Luz Rivas, Tina McKinnor, Cottie Petrie-Norris, Akilah Weber, Buffy Wicks, and Lori Wilson.
"The Vice President is inspiring a ‘Eureka!’ moment for the entire nation," Rivas said in a statement on Wednesday night. "We’re all proud that a fellow Californian is leading the country forward, and it’s an honor to send a diverse Assembly coalition that includes so many trailblazing women to witness Kamala Harris make history."
