BUT IN SPACE. BUT IN SPACE, YES. IF YOU ARE DRIVING TO CHAPEL HILL OR LAKE TAHOE THIS WEEKEND, AN EYE CATCHING DISPLAY IN PLACERVILLE MAY LEAVE YOU WONDERING WHAT’S GOING ON. AND SO IN THIS MORNING’S EXPLORE OUTDOORS, BRIAN HICKEY IS JOINING US TO TALK ABOUT WHY THERE ARE DOZENS OF FLAGS RIGHT ALONG THE HIGHWAY AND WHAT THE CELEBRATION IS BEHIND THAT. THAT’S RIGHT. THE STRETCH OF HIGHWAY 50 IN THE HEART OF PLACERVILLE IS KNOWN FOR ITS CHRISTMAS TREES. DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON, BUT THIS WEEKEND, A TRIP TO THE OUTDOORS IN CHAPEL HILL OR LAKE TAHOE WILL TAKE YOU PAST DOZENS OF CALIFORNIA STATE FLAGS LINING THE HIGHWAY. YOU CAN’T MISS THEM. THEY’RE WAVING IN THE BREEZE ALONG THE EASTBOUND SIDE OF HIGHWAY 50. THEY’VE BEEN METICULOUSLY PLACED THERE BY MEMBERS OF THE NATIVE DAUGHTERS OF THE GOLDEN WEST. MARGUERITE PARLOR, 12. THE NATIVE DAUGHTERS OF THE GOLDEN WEST HAVE MADE IT THEIR MISSION TO PRESERVE CALIFORNIA HISTORY AND TRADITION, AND EDUCATE THEIR COMMUNITY ABOUT IT. SO WHY THE FLAGS? WHY? THIS WEEK, OUR STATE’S BIRTHDAY IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER KNOWN AS ADMISSION DAY ON SEPTEMBER 9TH. IN 1850, CALIFORNIA BECAME THE 31ST STATE. IT’S NOT A HOLIDAY, AND IN FACT, MOST PEOPLE MIGHT GO ABOUT THEIR LIVES NOT EVEN AWARE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF THE DATE. SO THE NATIVE DAUGHTERS OF THE GOLDEN WEST PUT THE FLAGS OUT EACH YEAR TO GET PEOPLE THINKING ABOUT THE GREAT STATE WE CALL HOME. PEOPLE KIND OF FORGET THAT MY KIDS DIDN’T KNOW WHAT ADMISSIONS DAY WAS, AND MOST PEOPLE DON’T. BUT WE CELEBRATE CALIFORNIA BECOMING THE 31ST STATE IN THE UNION AND WE CELEBRATE IT WITH OUR BEAUTIFUL CALIFORNIA FLAG. SO DON’T FORGET ADMISSIONS DAY AND HONOR OUR STATE AND OUR FLAG AND DO SOMETHING GOOD FOR YOUR COMMUNITY. NOW THE FLAGS WILL BE OUT UNTIL TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10TH. AND AS SOON AS THOSE FLAGS COME DOWN, THEY WILL QUICKLY BE REPLACED BY AMERICAN FLAGS TO HONOR THOSE KILLED ON THE ATTACKS OF SEPTEMBER 11TH. SO A SMALL TOWN CHARM ALIVE AND WELL IN PLACERVILLE THIS YEAR, THE LADIES DEDICATED THE CALIFORNIA FLAG DISPLAY TO MARY ANN HARPER, WHO RECENTLY PASSED AWAY. SHE WAS PASSIONATE ABOUT THE FLAGS AND THE MISSIO
