Explore Outdoors: Rancho Seco's calm vibe is a change from its nuclear past
Less than an hour's drive from downtown Sacramento sits the Rancho Seco Recreation Area.
A spot described as a place to "take a short vacation and enjoy bird watching, boating, camping, fishing, hiking and even a sanctuary for rescued exotic animals and wildlife," according to online description on the Sacramento Municipal Utility District's website.
"The vibe now just low-key and family-oriented," said Jack Jue as he prepared to head out on the water.
But the history of this spot includes a more turbulent and controversial past than the current description.
That's because this now serene lake sits within view of two cooling towers symbolic of a time when this spot suffered one of the nation's most serious nuclear safety-related occurrences.
To learn more about both the past and present outdoor offerings within this recreation area, watch the story in the video player above.
Be advised the Rancho Seco Recreational Area is temporarily closed for road resurfacing until Sunday, Sept. 22.
