Nestled in the heart of Rocklin, California, Deer Creek Park is a hidden treasure often overlooked by passersby.
The park is located along Pacific Street, not far from the bustling Rocklin Quarry Adventure Park.
At first glance, one might dismiss it as merely a collection of granite boulders. However, history reveals it's more significant; it's believed to be one of the original Rocklin quarries, established in 1861 by Charles Brigham and Levi Hawes.
Known as the Brigham and Hawes Quarry, this site played an essential role in California's development. Granite extracted from here was used in constructing the state's Capitol building. Additionally, the quarry contributed granite for the adjacent Transcontinental Railroad as it made its way from Sacramento to Rocklin in 1864.
Today, this historical quarry has transformed into an overgrown pond, bordered by massive granite blocks. It offers a unique opportunity to explore these boulders and imagine the bustling activity from a bygone era when 60 quarries operated in the area.
Deer Creek Park has become a popular spot for various activities. It's an excellent location for rock climbing, particularly the sport of bouldering. The cracks and ledges make this site a challenge for even the most skilled climbers. In winter, when Tahoe’s granite walls are icy, climbers use this site to maintain their skills, needing only climbing shoes and a chalk bag.
Beyond climbing, the park attracts radio-controlled car enthusiasts who navigate rock crawlers over the tough terrain. Whether you're scrambling among the granite blocks or observing the terrain from afar, there's always something to do at Deer Creek Park. For those looking to explore the outdoors, this park offers a unique mix of history and adventure waiting to be discovered.
Deer Creek Park is located near the intersection of Pacific Street and Farron Road, across the street from Rocklin Quarry Park Adventures.
