Sacramento Republic FC Chairman Kevin Nagle and Wilton Rancheria Chairman Jesus Tarango took questions together Thursday about their new partnership, their shared vision for the railyards and the future of soccer in Sacramento. “We’re a team. We’re united. We’re coming as one,” said Nagle.Multiple announcements about what is to come for Republic FC and the Downtown Railyards came Thursday from the city, the team, and the Wilton Rancheria tribe. The plans, they each echoed, are only feasible due to the collaboration between them and investment from each of the three entities. With Republic, Wilton Rancheria will become the first Native American Nation to hold the majority ownership of a men’s professional sports team in the country. Wilton Rancheria is the only federally recognized tribe in Sacramento County. The announcement of the purchase came in tandem with Sacramento Mayo Darrell Steinberg’s introduction of a proposal that will speed up development of the Railyards and construction of the soccer stadium. The city council will vote on the proposed terms at its Nov. 12 meeting.“This is a good and great thing. This is about placemaking. This is about providing more experiences, more positive experiences for people, for families, more memories,” Steinberg said. “It's also a huge boost for our downtown and our economy.” In addition to the stadium, the development will include a new live entertainment venue. According to the city of Sacramento, Sacramento Republic FC – with Wilton Rancheria’s investment – will finance and develop the expandable 12,000 seat soccer stadium. The Downtown Railyard Venture will develop the 3,600-seat entertainment venue in the Central Shops, the city said. Financing will be supported, in part, by expanding the Stadium Enhanced Infrastructure Financing District. An EIFD allows a portion of the tax revenue generated to be allocated towards specific community projects.“It’s going to impact the region,” Nagle said. “We need a new stadium. We needed a partner and we found a great partner.”He said the vision extends beyond soccer as they plan to create a space that not only can host the team but a wide variety of activities, sporting events and community gatherings.“The Republic FC see has already been here and done some amazing things. The tribe has been here since time immemorial,” Tarango said. “I think it's just the two coming back together as one. I think it’s going to be better for our region.”City-issued documents state FC’s limited liability company, Indomitable, will invest approximately $175 million in the construction of the stadium and an additional $42 million in related infrastructure. Tarango credits the success of the tribe's Elk Grove casino for putting them in a position to make this kind of investment.“People forget that this region, between the American and Sacramento River, was a gathering place for people, the native peoples here,” Tarango said. “Why not today have those same native people represented with the communities that we have here and bring more people to us, make it a destination, come, come like the people did thousands of years ago.”Executive Director of the Downtown Sacramento Partnership Michael Ault believes people from across the region will frequent the new entertainment district. “The railyards doubles the size of the downtown core,” Ault said. “This is going to be a destination that's going to bring thousands of people for games and – yes -- soccer, but we've also got concerts, other events that are going to take place downtown.”The stadium news comes as the Athletics prepare to play in West Sacramento.“We're starting to complete the picture of this being a regional destination,” Ault said. “Downtowns define regions.”For Republic, Nagle will stay on as an owner of the team and serve as a managing partner.“To us, to me, it's a perfect match,” Tarango said. "We have an amazing partner here who is going to continue to to sit where he sits and to guide us."Current timelines have the stadium scheduled to be complete by late 2026 and the entertainment venue by 2027.
