Sacramento Railyards receiving a facelift as multiple projects are set to break ground
UPDATED AS WE LEARN MORE. AND NOW TO SOME BIG CHANGES COMING TO THE SACRAMENTO RAIL YARDS. A PROPOSED NEW SOCCER STADIUM IS MOVING FORWARD AGAIN AFTER A RECENT SETBACK. AND THAT’S NOT THE ONLY MAJOR DEVELOPMENT HERE. OTHER PROJECTS ARE PROMISING TO TRANSFORM AN AREA THAT HAS SAT VACANT FOR YEARS AND TODAY THE WILTON RANCHERIA TRIBE ANNOUNCED THAT IT’S NOW THE MAJORITY OWNER OF THE SACRAMENTO REPUBLIC FC. THEY’RE PLANNING TO BUILD A NEW STADIUM AT THE RAIL YARDS. IT’S AN IDEA THAT’S BEEN BOUNCED AROUND FOR YEARS NOW. THE SOCCER STADIUM IS JUST ONE OF THE PROJECTS SET TO BE COMING TO THE RAIL YARDS. KCRA 3’S ANDRES VALLE SPOKE TO THE HEAD DEVELOPER OF THAT COMMUNITY ABOUT THE OTHER PLANS IN THE WORKS. I’D SAY OUR TEAMS PROBABLY HASN’T BEEN THIS EXCITED IN TEN YEARS AS WE HAVE BEEN THIS WEEK. IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME IN COMING FOR THE PAST DECADE, DENTON KELLY AND HIS TEAM HAVE BEEN WORKING TO DEVELOP THIS AREA OF SACRAMENTO. KNOWN AS THE RAIL YARDS. IT TAKES A LOT OF TIME. IT TAKES A LOT OF PURSUIT OF GRANTS, WORK WITH THE CITY, PUBLIC PARTNERS TO FIGURE OUT HOW WE CAN FINANCE A VERY HEAVY BURDEN OF INFRASTRUCTURE. AND OUR TEAM HAS DONE A GREAT JOB OF SOLVING FOR THAT. ON THURSDAY, THE CITY REPUBLIC FC AND THE WILTON RANCHERIA TRIBE ANNOUNCED A COLLABORATION ON ANOTHER MASSIVE DEVELOPMENT AT THE RAIL YARDS, WHICH WILL INCLUDE A NEW AND LONG ANTICIPATED SOCCER STADIUM AND AN ENTERTAINMENT VENUE CALLED THE PAINT SHOP. WE’RE STANDING IN AN AREA THAT’S GOING TO BE TRANSFORMED INTO A CONCERT VENUE, AND THE DEVELOPERS OF THE RAIL YARDS SAY THIS PROJECT SHOULD BE FINISHED WITHIN THE NEXT TWO YEARS AND CAN HOLD UP TO 3600 PEOPLE AT THE END OF THE DAY IN ORDER TO BUILD OUT A NEIGHBORHOOD TO GET THE RETAIL, TO GET THE RESTAURANTS AND BARS, YOU GOT TO HAVE A DESTINATION THAT BRINGS PEOPLE AND THAT DRIVES ENOUGH TRAFFIC TO SUSTAIN THE RESTAURANTS, THE BARS AND THE RETAILERS. AND SO THIS IS ALWAYS THE STARTING POINT FOR URBAN DEVELOPMENT FROM OUR PERSPECTIVE. BY NEXT YEAR, KAISER PERMANENTE WILL BREAK GROUND ON ITS NEW HOSPITAL IN THE RAILYARDS. ANOTHER PROJECT THAT KELLY SAYS HAS BROUGHT BILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN INVESTMENTS TO THE COMMUNITY. THERE’S PROBABLY ABOUT $3 BILLION OF INVESTMENT GOING IN THE GROUND. YOU KNOW, BETWEEN KAISER SOCCER STADIUM AND THE PAINT SHOP. AND THEN YOU LOOK AT ALL THE THE HOUSING, YOU KNOW, WE’RE ENTITLED FOR 10,000 HOUSING UNITS. KELLY SAYS THE PROJECTS AROUND THE RAIL YARDS HAVE FACED MULTIPLE SETBACKS DUE TO THE AREA’S INFRASTRUCTURE, PUSHING THE TIMELINE FURTHER THAN HE HAD HOPED. THIS WAS AN INDUSTRIAL SITE THAT A CITY GOT BUILT AROUND, SO CREATING THIS MANY HOUSING UNITS, THIS MUCH DEMAND ON THE UTILITY SYSTEM WAS NOT SOMETHING THAT WAS DESIGNED FOR 30 YEARS AGO. REPORTING IN SACRAMENTO. I’M ROSEVILLE KCRA THREE NEWS. DEVELOPERS HOPE TO HAVE THE CONCERT VENUE OPEN BY THE END OF 2026, AND WE’RE GETTING SOME DETAILS ABOUT THE PROPOSED STADIUM AND ENTERTAINMENT CENTER. WE KNOW THE NEW STADIUM IS SET TO SEAT AROUND 12,000 PEOPLE, AND IT WILL BE CONSTRUCTED IN A WAY THAT IT COULD BE EXPANDED IN THE FUTURE. SACRAMENTO MAYOR DARRELL STEINBERG BELIEVES THAT THIS IS THE BIGGEST ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE CITY IN MORE THAN A DECADE. A DECADE FROM NOW. WE’RE THIS CITY IS GOING TO BE VERY, VERY DIFFERENT IN A VERY GOOD WAY. WE’RE ALREADY ON OUR WAY. BUT THIS IS, AS I SAID, I THINK THE BIGGEST ANNOUNCEMENT SINCE 2013, WHEN WE ALL CAME TOGETHER TO SAVE THE KINGS AND BUILD THE GOLDEN 1 CENTER IN DOCO. AND I JUST, I FEEL REALLY GOOD. THE MAYOR GOES ON TO SAY THAT FUNDING THE CITY IS CONTRIBUTING WILL NOT BE COMING FROM THE CITY’S GENERAL FUND. HE SAYS THAT THIS IS AN INVESTMENT IN INFRASTRUCTURE THERE AT THE RAIL YARDS, A TERM SHEET OUTLINING THE CITY’S CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE OVERALL PR

Sacramento Railyards receiving a facelift as multiple projects are set to break ground
After Thursday's announcement that a new soccer stadium is coming to Sacramento's Railyards, the head development group sat down with KCRA to discuss other community developments in the works. Denton Kelley, the CEO and president of LDK Ventures and Downtown Railyard Venture, has overseen the Railyards project for a decade. He and his team said they're ecstatic about the soccer stadium's announcement. "I'd say our team probably hasn't been this excited in 10 years as we have been this week. It's been a long time coming," Kelley said. The announcement of the soccer stadium came in conjunction with a new entertainment venue known as "The Paint Shop."The venue will be located inside one of the historic Railyard industrial buildings and hold up to 3,600 people during events. "At the end of the day, in order to build out a neighborhood to get retail, to get the restaurants and the bars, you got to have a destination that brings people. And that drives enough traffic to sustain the restaurants, bars and retailers. And so this is always the starting point for urban development from our perspective," Kelley said.By next year, Kaiser Permanente will break ground on its new hospital in the Railyards. It's another project that Kelley says has brought billions of dollars in investments to the community."There's probably about $3 billion of investment going on the ground, you know, between Kaiser, Soccer Stadium and The Paint Shop. And then you look at all the housing, you know, we're entitled to 10,000 housing units," Kelley said. Kelley said the projects around the Railyards have faced multiple setbacks due to the area's infrastructure, which has pushed the timeline further than he had hoped."This was an industrial site that a city got built around. So creating this many housing units and this much demand on utility systems was not something that was designed for 30 years ago," Kelley said. The developers hope to have the entertainment venue open by the end of 2026.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter
