Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe becomes the first ski resort to open in the Tahoe region for the winter season.
With the Lakeview Chairlift and one magic carpet lift operating today, the mountain kicked off its 60th season in business.
The resort leverages its high altitude and north-facing runs to get an early start before Thanksgiving.
Recent snowstorms provided natural snowfall, which, combined with cold temperatures, allowed the dedicated mountain operations team to produce sufficient snow through extensive snowmaking efforts.
The resort boasts over 50 snowmaking guns, including new portable snowmakers, that efficiently cover a thousand vertical feet of terrain with a 12 to 18-inch base.
At the top, the Lakeview Chairlift treats visitors to breathtaking vistas of Lake Tahoe, making it a favorite among guests.
According to spokesman Mike Pierce, Mt. Rose's location on Slide Mountain is a strategic advantage.
The north-facing slopes and high base elevation, at over 8,000 feet above sea level, create optimal conditions for early snow coverage.
"Getting your first turns in before Thanksgiving is fun, and the vibe here on the first day is energetic," Pierce said.
This season also marks the 60th anniversary of Mt. Rose serving as a beloved winter destination for the Reno area.
The resort opened in 1964, but the history of skiing near Reno dates back to the early 1900s with the development of the Galena Creek ski hill, just down the mountain from today's Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe.
While Mt. Rose is the first to open in the Lake Tahoe region, it follows Lee Canyon in southern Nevada, which opened last weekend.
Additional resorts are planning to open before Thanksgiving.
Boreal plans to open next weekend while Heavenly, Northstar California, Sugar Bowl and Soda Springs all plan to open by Nov. 22.
Palisades Tahoe is aiming to open on Nov. 27, and Sierra-at-Tahoe hopes to open a couple of days later on Nov. 29.
Kirkwood, Diamond Peak and Tahoe Donner are planning to open on Dec. 6, and Donner Ski Ranch will follow on Dec. 21.
