A man who worked at the California Controller's Office pleaded guilty recently for stealing jewels and other valuables while on the job.

The controller's office safeguards unclaimed property, belongings that have been left behind in safe deposit boxes after someone died or didn't pay the bill for example.

Miguel Espinosa, 60, pleaded guilty to three counts of grand theft.

When the California Highway Patrol got a warrant to search his house, they uncovered hundreds of items—from jewelry to coins and even bars of silver.
