Sacramento council unanimously approves financial terms for proposed Republic FC stadium
The Sacramento City Council voted Tuesday on a preliminary term sheet to build a soccer stadium and entertainment venue in the Railyards downtown.
The term sheet passed by a unanimous vote.
"If these eight years had not been so hard, it wouldn't have been nearly as sweet as it is today. But the good and great stuff happens when you overcome a lot of obstacles," said Darrell Steinberg the mayor of Sacramento.
Steinberg has been a huge supporter of the stadium being built.
The new deal to build the stadium came after Wilton Rancheria became the majority owner of the Sacramento Republic FC and agreed to invest in the Railyards development.
After the vote, Steinberg congratulated the tribe’s chairman Jesus Tarango Jr.
"I don't see them as a partner. They're just one of our brothers. They have the same obligation that we have to this land. And we hope to build something amazing and beautiful," Tarango Jr. said.
There was a large turnout at the meeting, with many attendees decked out in Sac Republic FC kits or the team's color—old glory red.
"This ownership group kept that dream alive. They know that they need to have a center, you know, like a community gathering place. You can't really do that at Cal Expo. It's beautiful out there but you can't do that there," said Sharon Anderson, a fan of the team.
The new development will span 31 acres, which will nearly double the size of downtown Sacramento, according to a news release. The city estimates that total costs for the stadium new entertainment venue and ancillary infrastructure will be $321 million.
