What to know about United Barbers Club's 'Heat the Streets' effort to help the homeless
So as the weather begins to cool down, many unhoused people are left without the supplies that they need to stay warm. One local organization is looking to help those in need and we're joined now by the organizers of Heat the streets, Jim up Pitman and Lonnie Horn. Thank you so much for joining us this morning. Both of you, we really appreciate it. Um So let's start off with just, just the goal behind heat the streets. Uh The goal behind heat the streets is to unite our barbers and our communities to provide clothing and other items of warmth for our homeless community. Where, where did you guys all see the need? Because I mean, this is pretty cool too because it, like you said, it, it's *** lot of barbers all getting together for *** common cause. It started out uh several years ago when we were just taking out food to give them food. And then at that time, they were asking for jackets and blankets and then we've seen *** lot of other people that was doing the food thing and not giving them the items of war and it was coming up on *** cold winter that year and we, uh, refocus ourselves to start getting items of war. So what do you start finding to be the most requested items during this time of year? Uh, socks, hats, sweaters, hoodies, uh, jackets, things like that. We try to keep it to *** minimum. We used to get everybody dropping every piece of clothing off, but we wanna make sure we get things that people can use and we, we won't, we won't keep excess afterwards. So we try to stick to those things. So I imagine you folks are all getting together, organizing things yourselves. Do you folks need extra volunteers? We need volunteers. Yes. Yes. Uh We've been blessed every year. We get uh *** pretty good amount of people that come out. We get repeats because it's such *** beautiful feeling to go out and help. Uh But we always need more people and they can join by, they could join them by going to United Barbers club.com or they could go to United Barbers Club, Instagram and click the link in our bio to volunteer or donate. What, what have you seen as far as the level of need out there? I mean, has it grown over the time that you folks have started to do this or I mean, can you even tell at this point? Yes, there was times that we were taking items out there and then we were also bringing them back uh uh towards the end, we'll have some leftovers. But now it's been to where we don't have enough. Um, so if anybody would like to donate hats, beanies, gloves, scarves, anything that would give them some warm, even hand warmers, uh, umbrellas, uh, tents, things like that. That would be able to help keep them out of the, uh, bad weather that's coming. Yeah, I was gonna say bottom line is, if you step outside you start noticing real quick that it is *** little colder than it was maybe just *** week, especially 23 weeks ago. And so we're not the only ones who need some assistance. Uh Go ahead and, and tell us where folks can go if they want to uh assist, whether it's volunteering or they want to just drop off some items. So if you guys wanna volunteer, uh go to United Barbers club.com, we have *** link that you guys can sign up to volunteer. Um We have several donation locations. One would be my barbershop at Uppercut Barbershop and then Lonnie's uh two shops which is world class dollars and world class Faders. We also have *** couple of Barber College Inspire Academy out in Stockton Moller, um Barber College out in the Bay area. And we have others that want to uh help out and we're gathering more people that wanna just join the calls you guys do. So that's great work. I know we all appreciate it and best of luck with everything. When you, when you folks actually starting to hand everything out. Good question. The uh we do this every Thanksgiving day morning and every Christmas morning and it became *** family tradition that, you know, we have kids and grandkids that they join us in that and they give before they receive. So it really grows some type of legacy, some type of tradition that they are giving on *** time when uh *** lot of people need. So it's beautiful again. Thank you so much for what you both do and for what your entire uh association does and we really appreciate it. Thank you so much. It is.
