BOYS AND I OPENING DISCOVERY. NOT FAR OFF INTERSTATE 680 NEAR MISSION BOULEVARD IN THE CITY OF FREMONT, SITS A PREHISTORIC GEM WITH A UNIQUE NAME. THIS IS A GLIMPSE AT SABERCAT HISTORICAL PARK, A TWO MILE LONG TRAIL THAT MEANDERS THROUGH THE TREES AND ALONG SABERCAT CREEK. THAT NAME LINKED TO THESE BOYS, DUBBED THE BOY PALEONTOLOGIST FROM THE 1930S TO THE 60S, THESE LOCAL STUDENTS AT THIS SPOT EXCAVATED A TROVE OF REMARKABLE FOSSILS DATING BACK TO THE LAST ICE AGE. THOUSANDS OF FOSSIL SPECIMENS, INCLUDING MAMMOTHS, GIANT SLOTHS, AND, OF COURSE, SABER TOOTHED CATS. BUT THERE’S EVEN MORE TO THIS HISTORY. ALONG THE TRAIL ARE THE RUINS OF THE DEVOE WINE STORAGE BUILDING. ONCE ONE OF THIS AREA’S LARGEST WINERIES. AT THE TURN OF THE 19TH CENTURY AND THEN THERE’S THIS TREE, A COAST LIVE OAK THAT STANDS 60FT TALL AND STRETCHES NEARLY 90FT WIDE. ITS SIZE AND BEAUTY AND AGE LEADING THE CITY TO DESIGNATE IT A LANDMARK TREE. IN 2012. SO WHETHER IT’S THE LINKS TO THE BOY PALEONTOLOGIST WINE, THIS TREE OR YOU’RE JUST LOOKING FOR A SPOT TO ENJOY A STROLL, THIS IS A GEM WORTH EXPLORING.
