Health officials warn Californians against drinking raw milk after second detection of bird flu virus

The California Department of Public Health is again warning residents of the Golden State not to consume raw milk from a Fresno County farm.Earlier this week, CDPH said the bird flu virus was detected in a retail sample of raw milk from the dairy Raw Farm LLC. The farm issued a voluntary recall for one batch of cream top, whole raw milk with a best-buy date of Nov. 27.On Wednesday, CDPH issued another warning about raw milk from Raw Farm. After the initial recall notice, the Santa Clara County Public Health Laboratory tested raw milk products from retail stores as a second line of consumer protection. The county identified bird flu during this sample testing.At the state's request, Raw Farm has issued a second recall, which includes lot code number 20241119 with a best-by date of Dec. 7."Public health experts have long warned consumers against consuming raw milk or raw milk products due to elevated risks of foodborne illness," CDPH said in a news release. "Outbreaks due to Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes, toxin-producing E. coli, Brucella, Campylobacter, and many other bacteria have all been reported related to consuming raw dairy products."Pasteurized milk and milk products are safe to drink, the department noted. The heating process kills pathogens that can cause illness, including bird flu.Since October, California has reported 29 confirmed cases of bird flu.
