'Dying to Ask' podcast: How Julia Forbes gets nine hours of sleep a night
SLEEP LAST NIGHT? WELL, A NEW SLEEP SURVEY FROM U.S. NEWS AND WORLD REPORT SHOWS THE TOP THREE THINGS KEEP US UP ARE COST OF LIVING, GUN VIOLENCE, WHICH WE’VE HAD THIS WEEK. AND POLITICS KCRA 3’S DEIRDRE FITZPATRICK TALKED WITH THE MAGAZINE’S SLEEP EDITOR TO FIND OUT HOW WE CAN GET A BETTER NIGHT’S REST. JULIA, YOUR STUDY FOUND THAT THREE OUT OF FOUR OF US SAY THAT STRESS HAS ACTUALLY KEPT US UP THIS YEAR. I’M CURIOUS TO KNOW WHAT THAT FOURTH PERSON IS DOING THAT THEY’RE NOT EXPERIENCING THAT. BUT BUT I DO FIND THAT THREE OUT OF FOUR PEOPLE TO BE REALLY A STAGGERING NUMBER. SLEEP IS A UNIVERSAL EXPERIENCE, RIGHT? WE NEED IT TO BE THE BEST THAT WE CAN BE. TACKLE THE DAY. BUT THE ACT OF SLEEPING AND GETTING THE BEST POSSIBLE REST CAN BE VERY NICHE. SO IT COULD BE FACTORS FROM THE DAY TO DAY LIFE STRESSORS. YOU HAVE WORK, YOU HAVE KIDS. THERE’S BIG WORLD EVENTS THAT ARE TOP OF MIND THAT WE ALSO COVER IN OUR SLEEP SURVEY. THE SLEEP DIVORCE FOR PEOPLE JUST SAY, LOVE YOU, BUT I DON’T LOVE SLEEPING WITH YOU HAS CONTINUED TO GAIN TRACTION. WHAT SHOULD WE READ INTO THAT? ESSENTIALLY ALL THIS MEANS IS YOU AND YOUR PARTNER LIKE CO SLEEPER, BED PARTNER, WHATEVER ARE GOING TO JUST SET YOUR OWN SPACE AND THAT COULD BE SOMETHING LIKE TWO MATTRESSES IN ONE ROOM. THAT COULD BE TOTALLY SEPARATE ROOMS. YOU DO WHAT WORKS FOR YOU. AND THEN ALSO THIS IS A CONVERSATION THAT YOU CAN HAVE JUST TO MAKE SURE, HEY, I’M NOT SLEEPING WELL. I DON’T THINK YOU ARE EITHER. SO HERE IS SOMETHING WE CAN TRY TO FIX THAT. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST THING WE COULD ALL TRY TONIGHT TO GET A BETTER NIGHT’S SLEEP? I LOVE THAT QUESTION AND IT’S MORE OF A CHALLENGE IF YOU WILL. SO THIS ALSO REALLY KIND OF TIES IN WITH THE SURVEY AS WELL. BUT THE NUMBER ONE BAD SLEEP HABIT WAS GOING TO BED AT DIFFERENT TIMES EVERY NIGHT. AND THAT IS FOR THE THIRD YEAR RUNNING. THAT HAS BEEN REPORTED BACK TO US AS THE NUMBER ONE BAD SLEEP HABIT. SO WHAT I WOULD LIKE US TO DO IS I WOULD LIKE US TO PICK A BEDTIME. WHATEVER WORKS FOR YOU AND JUST TRY AND STICK WITH IT. I KNOW THAT’S HARD WITH OUR BUSY SCHEDULES IN LIFE, BUT OVER TIME YOUR BODY IS GOING TO KIND OF PROGRAM ITSELF TO BE LIKE, OH, IT IS 1030. IT’S TIME TO GO TO SLEEP. OKAY? REAL QUICK, HOW MANY HOURS DID YOU SLEEP LAST NIGHT? AND WHAT IS YOUR BEDTIME IN MY CASE, NINE HOURS IS WHAT DOES IT FOR ME. I FEEL LIKE I’M THE BEST. I CAN BE. YOUR YOUR SLEEP GOALS FOR SURE, I KNOW, SO I JUST REALLY ENJOY SLEEPING. SO OBVIOUSLY I’M IN THE RIGHT LINE OF WORK. OKAY, CONVERSATION CONTINUES RIGHT NOW IN THE DYING TO ASK PODCAST. LEARN A SLEEP HABIT. YOU CAN START TONIGHT TO GET BETTER SLEEP. HOW SLEEP AFFECTS YOUR MOOD AND HOW JULIA BECAME A SLEEP EXPERT. SCAN
