Sacramento State's head coach out after dismal football season, is headed to Stanford
Sacramento State's head football coach is leaving the team after a dismal season, but he is headed to another football program.
Sources told KCRA 3's Michelle Dapper that Andy Thompson told the Hornets this Friday about his departure.
"We want to thank Coach Thompson and his family for all they have done for Sacramento State football over the last five seasons," Sac State Athletics Director Mark Orr said in a release. "Under his watch, the program has achieved its highest level of success. We wish him the best of luck in the future."
Thompson in 2022 was named the university's 12th head coach in its history. He previously served as the Hornets' defensive coordinator and linebackers coach since January 2019.
In his first season with the Hornets, Thompson landed eight wins overall.
This past season was a different story as Sac State, plagued by a massive number of player injuries, finished 3-9 overall with a five-game losing streak. In the Big Sky Conference, the Hornets tied with Northern Colorado for the worst record this season with a 1-7 standing.
In the 70th annual Causeway Classic that pits Sac State against rival UC Davis, the Hornets finished their regular season with a 42-39 loss.
Overall as head coach, Thompson finished 11-14 for the two seasons he served.
Sac State is also expecting a large turnover as 18 seniors graduated this year.
Thompson will be joining the staff at Stanford University, but it is not yet known in what capacity. He joins Sacramento native Troy Talor, another former Sac State head coach.
In 2023, Thompson led the Hornets against the Cardinal to secure a 30-23 win.
Sac State is beginning a national search for a replacement.
