Family members mourn woman killed in Woodbridge, as husband appears in court
A Woodbridge woman's death is putting a spotlight on the vulnerability of people in dangerous relationships.
Nicole Winans, 43, was shot and killed last week. Friends and family told KCRA she was a "bright light" and a "really great soul."
The suspect accused in her death is her 50-year-old husband Shane Winans.
Some of Nicole's family members who attended a brief initial court hearing for Shane Winans on Tuesday said they were shocked by Nicole's death.
"He just snapped," said Katrina Donahue, Nicole's cousin.
Donahue attended the hearing with another of Nicole's cousins, Jennifer Joyce. The two said they only started to learn about the details of their cousin's relationship after her death.
"She was probably embarrassed. You know what I mean? She didn't say anything to anybody," Joyce said. "It's just tragic."
San Joaquin County officials are urging anyone in a dangerous relationship to seek help through the county's Family Justice Center.
"This case epitomizes the deadly reality of domestic violence, especially at the most dangerous step of leaving an abusive relationship," said Beth O'Hara, chief deputy district attorney for San Joaquin County.
Shane Winans' hearing was scheduled for further arraignment on Dec. 19. In addition to a murder charge, he is also facing child endangerment charges.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233 or text 'START' to 88788.
