Posada event in Sacramento offers gifts and family services
SO FOR MANY, CHRISTMAS IS ABOUT GIVING GIFTS AND MAYBE EVEN PUTTING UP YOUR FAVORITE DECORATIONS. BUT FOR MANY OTHERS, IT’S A TIME WHERE FEELING SAFE AND SECURE CAN BE TOP OF MIND. THERE’S AN EVENT BEING HELD TODAY TO REMIND FOLKS WHERE THEY CAN ACTUALLY SEEK HELP, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY NEED IT, ESPECIALLY AROUND THE HOLIDAY SEASONS. OF COURSE, THIS MORNING WE WELCOME IN RACHEL RIOS, THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE LA FAMILIA COUNSELING CENTER. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US. WELL, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING US HERE. TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHY IS AN EVENT LIKE THE POSADA? WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO HAVE SOMETHING LIKE THIS? WELL, THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS, TO BE ABLE TO HAVE COMMUNITY COME TOGETHER IN A PLACE WHERE THEY FEEL SAFE, WHERE THEY FEEL NURTURED, AND TO BE ABLE TO SPREAD SOME JOY TO FAMILIES FROM THROUGHOUT OUR COMMUNITIES. AND AGAIN, THIS IS ONE OF THOSE OPPORTUNITIES WHERE THERE’S GOING TO BE A LOT OF ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES TO COME OUT AND CHECK OUT. SO WHAT’S IN STORE? SO WE HAVE A LOT OF ACTIVITIES. AS YOU MENTIONED, WE HAVE OTHER ORGANIZATIONS WHO ARE WITH US FIGHTING DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES, CRAFTS FOR THE CHILDREN. WE HAVE SANTA THAT WILL BE THERE. WE HAVE HOT CHOCOLATE AND FUN, AND WE HAVE SPECIAL GIFTS FOR THE CHILDREN. WE’RE GOING TO DO ONE THING JUST BECAUSE WE’RE HAVING ONE OF THE INCIDENTS WHERE THE YOUR HAIR MIGHT BE TOUCHING THE MIC. SO GO AHEAD AND TELL US ONE MORE TIME WHAT WHAT EXACTLY IS IN STORE FOR FOLKS. SO WE HAVE MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR KIDS TO HAVE ACTIVITIES. WE HAVE CRAFT ACTIVITIES, GAMES. WE HAVE SANTA. BUT YOU HELP FOLKS YEAR ROUND, RIGHT? LA FAMILIA HAS BEEN IN SACRAMENTO 51 YEARS AND WE PROVIDE A MULTITUDE OF SERVICES. WE ARE A FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER. SO FIRST AND FOREMOST, WE STRENGTHEN FAMILIES BY PROVIDING PARENTING HOME VISITATION, SUPPORT SERVICES. WE ARE A CAREER CENTER, SO WE HELP PEOPLE GET JOBS AND MOVE FORWARD. WE HAVE EDUCATIONAL SERVICES, YOUTH PROGRAMS, OLDER ADULT PROGRAMS, AND WE ARE MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING CENTER AS WELL. WOW. AS FAR AS THE EVENT TONIGHT, WHERE CAN FOLKS GO? DO THEY NEED TICKETS OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT? NO, THIS IS FREE TO THE COMMUNITY. IT IS FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE. SO IT IS FREE TO THE COMMUNITY FROM 330 TO 630 TONIGHT. WE DO HAVE TENTS TO ADJUST FOR THE WEATHER. ABSOLUTELY. BUT IT WILL BE JUST AN OUTDOOR INDOOR ACTIVITY. LOTS OF FUN FOR EVERYONE. OH BEAUTIFUL. WE HAVE RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO LET PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT HEALTH CARE SERVICES, WELLNESS SERVICES, JOBS, MANY OTHER SERVICES AS WELL. La Familia Counseling Center will host its annual "Posada Navideña" event on Friday, Dec. 13, bringing the community together to celebrate the holiday season and ensure children and families know they have a safe place to gather for support."Posada" means "inn" or "lodging" in Spanish. Today, many posada celebrations such as La Familia's recognize the multicultural tradition and importance of creating safe spaces for children and families from all backgrounds to gather, connect with neighbors, share food and know they are welcomed.La Familia served more than 800 people at its 2023 posada event, and anticipates serving even more children and families this year."Posada means letting someone into your home, and that's what we do at La Familia 365 days of the year. We make sure kids, families, and seniors have a place they know they can come to for mental health care, educational support, career services, and support from one another," said Rachel Rios, executive director of La Familia Counseling Center. "Our Posada Navideña is one more way we welcome people in and spread some joy."Toys have been collected over the last several weeks thanks to many community partners, including Casa de Español, Sanchez Reality, and local car clubs, including Florin Fat Fenders and Challengers Car Club. UC Davis Health will be administering free flu shots for children and families.The event includes a visit from Santa, and every child under age 18 receives a special toy.
