'Moving to the top': 17 women graduate from Sacramento-based job-readiness program
A group of women who have experienced homelessness or domestic violence in the Sacramento area are now more prepared to join the workforce.
Seventeen women graduated from the Women's Empowerment Job-Readiness Program. It's the 97th graduating class for this Sacramento program.
One of the 17 women graduating is Monica Montalvo-French. Graduation day is a big day for Montalvo-French.
"This program is everything to me right now. I came from the bottom and I'm moving to the top," she said.
Montalvo-French is a single mother who experienced domestic violence. She decided to join the intense nine-week program to turn her life around.
"Women's empowerment is stability... I really enjoy it. I love Women's Empowerment," Montalvo-French said.
Lisa Culp is the Executive Director at Women's Empowerment and after 97 graduating classes she says she has found the secret to success.
"We screen for motivation. If you interview for motivation that is the best screening for success."
During the course the women get training with mock interviews, resume building and computer literacy classes.
Through the classes, the women also regain the self-confidence that many of them said they had lost.
Now that she has graduated, Montalvo-French is planning a future to help others just like she was helped and empowered.
"I want to go into health care. I want to be a nurse and help the elderly in nursing homes," Montalvo-French said.
