Stanislaus County residents voice need for traffic light at deadly intersection
Days after a crash took the lives of four people in Stanislaus County, nearby residents are pushing for change.
The crash happened at the intersection of Highway 165 and Greenway Avenue near Turlock on Sunday morning.
People are calling that intersection a safety hazard.
According to California Highway Patrol, since Jan. 1, 2023, there have been six car crashes at the intersection. Three of those crashes caused injuries, including the crash on Sunday.
The Airport Grocery and Liquor store sits at the intersection. The owner told KCRA 3 that he notices at least one major crash each year.
There are also multiple spots around this intersection where flowers and crosses are placed in memory of people who have died.
Neighbors suggest a traffic light should be placed in the intersection, with the goal of preventing more accidents from happening.
They said they reached out to the county about the issue and the county said that it is under the California Department of Transportation's jurisdiction.
KCRA 3 reached out to the California Department of Transportation for an interview and they declined.
"You can't hardly get across and there's times— I lived down there for 40 years. I stood right here for five minutes, eight minutes waiting for traffic to clear,” said Larry Brunner, who lives near the intersection.
Another neighbor, Jesse Acevedo, said he worries about his children.
“As a father of, you know, teenage kids that are driving, I let them know every day that they get on this intersection here to be careful, be patient of the oncoming traffic. So I would like to see a stoplight,” Acevedo said.
The neighbors all agree that a traffic light at the intersection would help prevent accidents.
“It happens so many times. So we need to put an end to it so we will find some way we can cut down or reduce incidents," Acevedo said.
CHP is still investigating the crash that killed four people on Sunday.
