Vandalized parking meters in Sacramento cause drivers to second guess where to park
A multitude of parking meters across Sacramento have been vandalized. The area where the meters collect coins has been pried open as thieves collect the money.
KCRA traveled to multiple areas in Downtown and Midtown and noticed numerous streets with tampered parking meters.
"I see them pretty frequently, honestly. I see them on 15th Street and 16th Street a lot," said James Wells, a driver in the area.
Earlier this month, Sacramento Police arrested four people in connection to parking meter vandalism and thefts.
However, the city is still working on getting the meters repaired, and drivers have questions about where to park in the meantime.
"I thought... Do I park there? Or am I going to get a ticket? Or is it free?" said Travis Kyle, a driver in downtown.
According to the city, if the meter is still functioning and accepting card payments or payments through the ParkMobile app, customers should complete their transactions. A citation will still be issued for non-payment of a functioning meter if other forms of payment are still available.
"If you get a ticket for parking at one of these things, you are being held responsible for someone else's actions. That is kind of not the idea of what these tickets are for," said Wells.
Some drivers told KCRA that they've seen others manipulate tampered meters to their benefit.
"I think I saw someone the other day put a quarter in and then pull it out of the back and put it in again. I thought that was pretty smart," said Heather Pruitt, a driver in Downtown.
The city does not have a timeline for when these meters will be fixed. They are asking people to call 311 to report any vandalized meters they come across so that they are aware of locations that need to be repaired.
In the meantime, other drivers are trying to keep it safe.
"Don't park in the busted meters because you're going to get a ticket or a fine," said Lynda Larsen, a driver in Midtown.
While others say to just be aware of your surroundings.
"Just pay really close attention to what street you're parking on, what the rules are. Look for it if there are meters, not meters," said Matt Dunn, a driver in Midtown.
