Holiday shoppers wear, spend green in historic Nevada City for Victorian Christmas
THE SHOPPERS AND THE SHOPKEEPERS. OLD RISING OF THE SUN. THE HISTORIC STREETS OF NEVADA CITY COME ALIVE WITH THE TRADITIONS OF THE VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS. YEAH, I ALWAYS FEEL VERY NOSTALGIC, WHICH IS ONE OF THE BEST PARTS OF IT. EVA BUSHNELL HAS BEEN COMING TO THE OLD FASHIONED HOLIDAY CELEBRATION SINCE SHE WAS A TODDLER. IT’S ONE OF MY FAVORITE PLACES TO BUY GIFTS FOR THE PEOPLE IN MY LIFE. NOW A COLLEGE GRADUATE, BUSHNELL BROUGHT HER GRANITE BAY HIGH SCHOOL FRIENDS ALL HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS. WE’VE BEEN TRYING TO SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESSES. THAT’S ACTUALLY PART OF THE REASON WHY WE CAME TO FIND A COUPLE OF THINGS DOWN HERE FOR CHRISTMAS. YEAH, FOR OUR FAMILIES. THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT THE OWNER OF THE POP UP SHOP, MY FAVORITE THINGS IS BANKING ON THIS EVENT BRINGS ALMOST HALF OF THE YEAR’S REVENUE IN THIS ONE MONTH. SO IT’S A HUGE, HUGE DEAL FOR THE SMALL BUSINESSES OF NEVADA CITY. WE’RE SEEING SMALL BUSINESSES WHO HAVE BEEN IN A SEA OF RED NOW ENJOYING THE HOLIDAY, GREEN COMING THROUGH THE DOOR. JOHN KABATECK REPRESENTS 13,000 CALIFORNIA SMALL BUSINESSES AS PART OF THE NATIONAL FEDERATION OF INDEPENDENT BUSINESS. HE SAYS THEIR MONTHLY CHECK IN SHOWS OWNERS ARE FEELING OPTIMISTIC ABOUT HOLIDAY SPENDING. WE REALLY SAW PEOPLE SAYING, LOOK, SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS HAVE BEEN THERE FOR US. NOW IT’S OUR TURN. IT’S OUR TURN TO SHOW THEM THE LOVE, THE SUPPORT, THE CARE THAT THEY’VE BEEN GIVING US IN OUR COMMUNITIES ALL OF THESE YEARS. IT’S THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT OF GIVING, RINGING THROUGH THE STREETS OF NEVADA CITY. I DON’T KNOW MANY PLACES WHERE YOU CAN WATCH ME GLUE TOGETHER AN ORNAMENT AND THEN AND BUY IT FOR UNDER $10. WE LIVE IN AN ERA OF JUST SUCH COMMERCIALISM THAT IT’S NICE TO SORT OF STEP BACK AND FIND THINGS THAT ARE HANDMADE, OR SUPPORT INDIVIDUALS INSTEAD OF LARGE CORPORATIONS AND THE STUFF THAT THEY HAVE IN NEVADA CITY IS JUST ALWAYS SO WELL MADE AND SO BEAUTIFUL AND UNIQUE. YEAH, IT’S A LITTLE MORE MEANINGLESS TO SHOP ONLINE HERE. YOU’RE REALLY CHOOSING SOMETHING SPECIAL FROM A SPECIAL PLACE IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA. IN NEVADA CITY, MICHELLE BANDUR KCRA THREE NEWS. The holiday rush is on with Christmas and Hanukkah just one week away.Some shoppers are enjoying the holiday traditions in Nevada City for the Victorian Christmas, which started in 1978.The historic downtown streets come alive with the traditions of Victorian Christmas. Shoppers are taking in the festivities while spending some green. "I always feel very nostalgic, which is one of the best parts of it," said Eva Bushnell.Bushnell has been coming to the old-fashioned holiday celebration since she was a toddler. "It's one of my favorite places to buy gifts for the people in my life," she said.Now a college graduate, Bushnell brought her Granite Bay high school friends, who are all home for the holidays."We've been trying to support small businesses," said Gianna Negri. "That's actually part of the reason why we came, to find a couple of things for Christmas, for our families."That's exactly what the owner of the pop-up shop My Favorite Things is banking on."This event brings almost half of the year's revenue in this one month," said Tina Bassich Haller. "It's a huge deal for the small businesses of Nevada City."
