A person was hospitalized with a severe case of bird flu in Louisiana, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in a news release Wednesday.Following that case and additional reports, the total of human cases stands at 65 cases across 10 states, CDC data shows. Over half of those occurred in California, where Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency “to streamline and expedite the state’s response,” on the same day as news about the severe case in Louisiana was reported.The severe case of the highly pathogenic H5N1 flu was determined to be caused by exposure to sick and dead birds in backyard flocks, according to the CDC, which would be the first linked to a backyard flock.Outbreaks of the highly pathogenic H5N1 flu have spread in cattle herds across 16 states and in poultry across 50 states. The CDC still reports the current public health risk for the virus as low, and person-to-person transmission has not been documented.
