The Lourenco family was on their way to church around 9:25 a.m. Sunday when a speeding sedan broadsided their Jeep as they were crossing the intersection of Greenway Avenue at Highway 165 in the Turlock area, CHP said.
Daniel Lourenco, 44, and 45-year-old Jennifer Lourenco died at the scene, CHP said. Their 16-year-old daughter Madelynn Lourenco died in the hospital shortly after the crash. The sedan's driver, 22-year-old Uriel Guizar Negrete, also died at the scene.
CHP said everyone in the Jeep was wearing their seat belt, but Negrete was not.
Jennifer Lourenco was a beloved teacher at Sinclear Elementary School and was Sinclear's Teacher of the Year in 2023-2024, the Ceres Unified School District wrote in a statement.
"She was a gifted and dedicated educator and a beloved colleague whose loss will be deeply felt throughout the school community," the school district's statement read.
Her brother, Jason McClelland, told KCRA that Jennifer was someone who saw the best in people and also brought out the best in them.
"Daniel was, I mean, the best husband," McClelland said. "He raised an amazing family of all good kids."
Both Madelynn and the 14-year-old boy were students at Pittman High School. As of Friday, the Stanislaus County Coroner has yet to identify the teen, but the family identified him as Matthew Lourenco.
"Maddie had a smile that would just light up the room. You know, she was like the social butterfly of that family," McClelland said.
McClelland described Matthew Lourenco as a "goofy" boy, who loved soccer and just took up cross-country running.
"He always wanted to push himself," he said.
The 19-year-old teenager who survived the crash is still recovering in the ICU, the family said.
"Our oldest niece, the one who is still fighting on in the hospital, will likely need a lot of long-term care," McClelland said.
People who live in the area have described the area where the crash happened as a safety hazard that has seen several major crashes.
CHP said since Jan. 1, 2023, there have been six car crashes at the intersection, three of which resulted in injuries, including the Dec. 14 crash.
A GoFundMe was established to raise funds for the family's funeral expenses.
The family is also holding two events for the public wishing to pay their respects.
From 6-8 p.m. on Dec. 26, there will be a visitation and viewing at the Turlock Memorial Park at 425 North Soderquist Road.
On Dec. 27, there will be a funeral mass and rosary at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church on 2602 South Walnut Road. That will be at 11 a.m.
