Sacramento State lecturer arrested twice in 2 weeks for violating domestic violence restraining order
A Sacramento State art lecturer has been arrested for violating a domestic violence restraining order twice in two weeks.
KCRA 3 Investigates reported Tavarus Blackmon was under investigation by the school after posting a series of concerning and explicit messages on social media. Students reached out to KCRA after they felt like their safety may have been put at risk.
On Thursday night, KCRA 3 reported that Blackmon's wife had a domestic violence restraining order against him. Blackmon had also previously pleaded no contest in 2020 to a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon. He was sentenced to probation.
Jail records show late Thursday night, Blackmon was taken into custody for violating a court order. Police say Blackmon was also arrested on December 11 for violating a court order. Sacramento police say they requested a bail enhancement due to this being a "recurring issue."
Blackmon was in custody on $85,000 bail. He's due in court on December 23.
Before his arrest, KCRA 3 Investigates spoke to Blackmon briefly over the phone, but he did not want to discuss the allegations against him and hung up.
Before his arrest, Sacramento State provided the statement below:
"The actions alleged to have been committed by a Sacramento State lecturer are troubling and totally at odds with the University’s values. While an investigation into the lecturer’s actions continues, Sac State will continue to take all measures to maintain the safety of our students and the campus community.
The person in question is not now teaching at Sac State and has no University-sanctioned contact with students.
The University has no comment about specifics of the allegations and will not provide further information as it relates to the ongoing personnel issue. Sac State will continue to look into the allegations while preserving safety and ensuring that students are provided the education they expect and deserve."
