Northern California forecast: Timeline for rain, high elevation snow on Saturday
Another round of wet weather gets underway in Northern California on Saturday, the first day of winter.
Showers should tamp down some of the patchy, dense fog that has been present in the Central Valley, according to our weather team. Most of the showers in Sacramento will be in the morning.
Scattered showers will continue through the early afternoon for the Valley and mid-afternoon for the Foothills with between a tenth and a quarter of an inch of rainfall anticipated.
Snow levels with this first wave of moisture will start around 6,500 feet and lift to 7,700 feet in the afternoon, meaning most of the passes will likely see rain today.
Snow levels remain high, between 7,500 and 8,000 feet through Monday before falling to 6,300 feet Tuesday, making driving more treacherous.
If you have to travel by car, Sunday and Monday are the best days to do so.
Several waves of moisture will move through Northern California through Christmas Eve on Tuesday.
Sunday and Monday will see widely scattered showers with minimal accumulation and are such the best days for travel, but Tuesday is an Impact Day as rain may be heavy at times with a few thunderstorms also possible.
Christmas Day on Wednesday will be dry in Northern California with mostly cloudy skies in the Valley and a little more sunshine in the foothills and Sierra.
Dry weather will be short lived though as rain and snow return to the region for Thursday and Friday with lower snow levels.
