A New Jersey man who was ice climbing Shoestring Gully in the White Mountains fell about 60 feet and had to be carried out by rescuers, authorities said.New Hampshire Fish and Game said the 55-year-old was climbing with a friend and fell about 60 feet on a steep section near the top of the climb. The man suffered an arm and head injury, authorities said.The friend dressed the injured climber in warm clothes and kept climbing up to the ridge until he could call 911. Fish and Game was notified around 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Conservation officers and more than a dozen volunteers from Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue, Mountain Rescue Service and Bartlett Jackson Ambulance Service responded, authorities said. Rescuers treated the injured ice climber for hypothermia and got him into a litter, Fish and Game said. He was lifted almost 400 feet back to level ground and carried nearly two miles to the trailhead. Some areas of the trail were so steep that roped belays were used to move the litter down safely, authorities said. The injured ice climber reached the trailhead before 5 a.m. Sunday and was taken to Memorial Hospital for treatment.
