Families in Stanislaus County are getting some last-minute gifts for their children's Christmas lists. It's all thanks to the Modesto Salvation Army Corps annual toy drive.
“This is a huge help because they haven't been able to go out and shop. They don't have the money for it," said Glafira Rodriguez, a program manager. "So that's why they're signing up to be able to get the help."
Family members waited in line most of the morning. Then after the check-in process, comes the best part— toys.
Dozens of the volunteers and workers were seen decking the halls and rows with a large selection of toys.
“Do I have to buy food or do I have to buy a toy? I mean, that's a big choice for a parent and so this way they can have their meal and they can relax and enjoy watching their beautiful children's faces when they open up their gifts,” said Nancy Shamgochian, a volunteer.
The toy drive helps get toys to more than 500 families and around 1,100 children.
Each person can choose one big gift, 3 small gifts, stocking stuffers, clothes and shoes for their children.
At the end of the route, families can take home a frozen turkey and canned items to enjoy over the holidays.
"They're able to at least, you know, smile and have a Christmas that they do not, will not get if they're not able to come here,” said Christopher Kim, the Corps officer.
This toy drive was made possible by donations made to the Salvation Army all year long.
