First human bird flu case confirmed in Stanislaus County
Health officials in Stanislaus County have reported the first human case of bird flu in a resident who had contact with infected dairy cattle.The person has mild symptoms and was treated with antiviral medications, the county’s Health Services Agency Administration said on Monday. A strain of bird flu, H5N1, is widespread in birds and has been causing outbreaks in dairy cows and commercial poultry operations. There have been at least 36 confirmed human cases so far during the 2024 outbreak in California. In all but one of the cases, those infected were exposed by cattle. A child was also infected after drinking raw milk, health officials said. So far, there has not been person-to-person spread like with COVID-19. State and federal health officials said the risk to the general public is very low. Those who have contact with infected animals like farmworkers are at a higher risk of getting bird flu. Health officials encourage them to wear personal protective equipment. Bird flu symptoms include eye redness, headaches, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, diarrhea, vomiting, body aches, trouble breathing and fever. Federal data shows California is the most impacted state with confirmed cases in livestock. Gov. Gavin Newsom last week declared a state of emergency for bird flu.
