'We want justice': Family of 2-year-old girl hit and killed by a truck in Woodland speaks out
HOW OLD IS THE TODDLER? CATALINA. YEAH. BRITTANY. HER NAME IS ALAINA. SHE WAS TWO YEARS, TWO YEARS OLD, AND WAS JUST A MONTH AWAY FROM HER THIRD BIRTHDAY. HER PARENTS ARE JUST HEARTBROKEN RIGHT NOW. WE SPOKE TO THEM ABOUT A COUPLE OF MINUTES AGO, AND THEY’RE OUT HERE RIGHT NOW HONORING HER LIFE. YOU CAN SEE FAMILY AND FRIENDS HAVE GATHERED AT THIS VIGIL HERE WHERE IT HAPPENED. THEY TOLD US THEY WITNESSED IT WHEN IT HAPPENED, THEY WERE SETTING UP THEIR TACO STAND FOR THE NIGHT WHEN THEY SAW A TRUCK MOVING BACKWARDS AND HIT THEIR DAUGHTER. THEY RECALL IMMEDIATELY TAKING HER TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE WE KNOW SHE LATER DIED. WOODLAND POLICE TELLS US THIS HAPPENED AT AROUND 3:45 P.M. HERE ON WEST STREET. THEY LOCATED A BLACK DODGE ON SCENE WITH A THREE YEAR OLD INSIDE ALONE. LATER, THEY FOUND A MAN CLOSE TO THE SCENE THAT WAS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS TRUCK, WHICH WAS LATER DETERMINED WAS THE ONE THAT HIT THE TODDLER. AND THE PARENTS TELL US RIGHT NOW THEY ARE HEARTBROKEN. THEY’RE GRIEVING. AND THIS IS HOW THEY DESCRIBED THEIR TWO YEAR OLD DAUGHTER TO US, ALLEGRA MILLER. SHE DESCRIBES HER DAUGHTER AS A HAPPY CHILD WHO LOVED TO DANCE AND WAS THE FAMILY’S HAPPINESS GO FOR. HE HOPES PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THAT HE WANTS JUSTICE SINCE HE HAS JUST LOST HIS DAUGHTER. I, IOLANI, WAS THE YOUNGEST OF THEIR THREE CHILDREN AND RIGHT NOW THEY SAY THEY JUST DON’T HAVE WORDS FOR WHAT HAPPENED, ESPECIALLY SINCE THEY WITNESSED IT. YOU CAN SEE THERE’S SOME PEOPLE THAT HAVE LEFT, BUT EARLIER WE SAW DOZENS OUT HERE GATHERING, SHOWING UP TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT. THIS IS STILL AN ONGOING INVESTIGATION. WOODLAN POLICE DID TELL US THAT THEY DO NOT BELIEVE THIS IS A DUI, BUT THIS IS STILL ONGOING. The family of the 2-year-old child killed after being hit by a truck in Woodland on Saturday afternoon was identified by her parents as Ailahni Sanchez Martinez.Ailahni’s parents, Rosa Martinez and Sandro Sanchez, said she was just a month away from her birthday. “She was always happy, she loved to dance and brought joy to the family,” her mother Rosa Martinez said. Leer en español.Ailahni’s parents told KCRA 3 that they were setting up their taco stand when they saw the truck moving backward toward their daughter. "I heard a scream and ran because I saw it going toward my daughter, but it was too late," Sanchez said.They immediately took her to the hospital, where she later died. "He left the vehicle running and with a child inside," said Sanchez. "What happened is not right."Sergeant Towle, a spokesperson for Woodland police, told KCRA 3 that the deadly crash happened around 3:45 p.m. in the 300 block of West Street, off of West Main Street, where there is a 76 gas station. At the crash scene, the police department said they spotted a black Dodge truck with a 3-year-old child inside. They also found a man near the scene who was associated with the truck and determined it was the vehicle that hit Ailahni.“We want justice,” said Sanchez. “I lost my daughter because of someone else. “Towle said DUI is not suspected at this time but did not specify if there was anything criminal that led to the crash.The family has set up a GoFundMe to raise money to help with funeral expenses.
