San Joaquin County's registrar of voters details efforts to ensure a 'safe and secure election'

AWAY NOW FROM ELECTION DAY AND EARLY VOTING ALREADY. WELL UNDERWAY. IF YOU HAVEN’T HAD THE CHANCE TO DIG THROUGH THE ELECTION MATERIAL THAT YOU RECEIVED IN THE MAIL, DON’T WORRY, YOU’RE NOT ALONE. AND JOINING US THIS MORNING TO ANSWER SOME OF YOUR QUESTIONS FROM THE SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY REGISTRAR OF VOTERS, IS OLIVIA HALE. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME. THIS MORNING OF COURSE. GOOD MORNING. SO LET’S START WITH ELECTION TRANSPARENCY. IT’S BEEN A BIG FOCUS FOR YOUR COUNTY. HOW ARE YOU ADDRESSING THOSE CONCERNS RIGHT NOW? THAT’S A WONDERFUL QUESTION. AND SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, WE ARE DOING EVERYTHING WE CAN TO ENSURE VOTERS FEEL THAT THEY HAVE A SAFE AND SECURE ELECTION. WE’VE RECENTLY INSTALLED CAMERAS ON ALL OF OUR DROP BOXES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY. THEY’RE LIVE STREAMED TO OUR WEBSITE, SO VOTERS, IF THEY’RE USING ONE OF OUR COUNTY, DROP BOXES, THEY CAN REST ASSURED THAT THEIR BALLOT IS WATCHED THE MOMENT THEY DROP IT OFF AND WILL REMAIN UNDER OUR WATCH UNTIL IT IS TABULATED AND COUNTED ON ELECTION NIGHT. AND AGAIN, THOSE DROP BOXES ARE ALREADY SET UP. THEY HAVE BEEN FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS NOW. WHEN PEOPLE DROP THEIR BALLOTS IN THERE, THOSE BALLOTS AREN’T COUNTED YET. CORRECT. THAT IS CORRECT. THEY ARE ACTUALLY PICKED UP BY OUR COURIERS. WE HAVE COUNTY STAFF THAT GO OUT AND PICK UP THE BALLOTS UNDER STRICT CHAIN OF CUSTODY, AND THEY’RE BROUGHT BACK TO OUR OFFICE WHERE THEY THEN BEGIN THE PROCESSING. AND AGAIN, ELECTION SECURITY. ALSO, ONE OF THOSE THINGS TOP SOME TOP OF MIND CLUSTERS OF MAILBOXES CONTINUE TO BE TARGETS FOR THIEVES JUST IN GENERAL. SO WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND TO ANYONE IN CASE YOUR BALLOT MATERIAL MAY HAVE BEEN STOLEN? JUST EVEN WHETHER OR NOT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN UNINTENTIONAL, BUT PERHAPS IT WAS STOLEN. SO WE ARE ACTUALLY. THAT’S A WONDERFUL QUESTION. UNDER THERE’S STRICT CHAIN OF CUSTODY EVEN WHEN A MAIL BALLOT GOES OUT. WE HAVE RECORD THAT OF WHAT DATE THAT BALLOT WAS MAILED TO THE VOTER. AND IF A VOTER CONTACTS US AND SAYS THAT THEY HAVE NOT RECEIVED THEIR BALLOT, THAT FIRST BALLOT IS IMMEDIATELY VOIDED AND WE REISSUE A BALLOT TO THAT VOTER, THEY CAN GIVE US THE CORRECT INFORMATION IF THEY NEED IT, TO GO TO A P.O. BOX OR WHATEVER. THEY CAN UPDATE OUR OFFICE AND WE’RE ABLE TO GET THEM A BALLOT IN THEIR CUSTODY AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, AND THEY CAN REST ASSURED THAT ANY BALLOT THAT WAS PRIOR ISSUED WAS VOIDED AND WILL NOT BE COUNTED. IT IS ALWAYS THE THE RULE OF THUMB ONE BALLOT, ONE VOTER, NO MATTER WHAT. AND I HAD A CHANCE TO LOOK AT YOUR FOLKS WEBSITE THIS MORNING. IT IS INCREDIBLY ORGANIZED AND VERY EASY TO USE, VERY USER FRIENDLY. THERE’S EVEN A GREAT LITTLE TOOL CALLED WHERE’S MY BALLOT? ABSOLUTELY. SO THAT FEEDS INTO THE STATE SYSTEM FOR BALLOT TRACKING. AND SO YOU CAN SIGN UP FOR WHERE’S MY BALLOT? AND THEY WILL SEND YOU NOTIFICATIONS SO THAT YOU CAN TRACK YOUR BALLOT THROUGH THE ENTIRE PROCESS. ALL RIGHT. OLIVIER HALE, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME THIS MORNING. REALLY APPRECIATE YO

Early voting is now underway with three weeks until the general election in California.Olivia Hale, the registrar of voters for San Joaquin County, said Monday on KCRA 3 that officials are “doing everything we can to ensure voters feel that they have a safe and secure election.” That includes having recently installed cameras for all of the county’s ballot drop boxes. The footage is being livestreamed on the county’s election website. “Voters, if they’re using one of our county drop boxes, they can rest assured that their ballot is watched the moment they drop it off, and will remain under our watch until it is tabulated and counted on election night.” The ballots are picked up by county staff and they are brought back to the elections office before they are counted, she said. Asked about what to do if someone’s ballot is lost or stolen, Hale said that if a voter contacts them to let them know that, the initial ballot is then voided and a new one is issued.“The rule of thumb is one ballot, one voter no matter what,” she said. For more information about the November election, including key issues and other races on the ballot, check out the KCRA 3 Voter Guide.Find more political news from our national team here.
