Each year in September, all schools in Italy are encouraged to produce a project, especially by using art, that honors the memory of the Holocaust.

Hundreds of thousands of students have participated in the annual contest over the past 20 years.

“Our approach is not to teach only the Shoah, but to make the program integrated into Jewish culture. We don’t want the message to be only that Jews were persecuted,” said Noemi Di Segni, president of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities. “It is important for students to understand that the group was part of the Italian culture.”
