Gov. Newsom refers to first partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom as a Republican. She's not anymore
California Gov. Gavin Newsom is married to a Republican? Not exactly.
Newsom brought up the first partner, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, when pressed by reporters in Washington, D.C., on why he was only meeting with fellow Democrats.
Republicans are set to control the House, Senate and the presidency when Donald Trump takes office. That puts them in position to control any federal funding that could be headed California's way.
“I’m doing everything I can to do what I can in a very short period of time,” Newsom said on Wednesday. “I meet with Republicans every day because I’m married to one.”
Newsom added that he has a large Republican family.
Siebel Newsom is a registered Democrat, the governor’s office confirmed to KCRA 3. But she previously was a Republican and has spoken to KCRA 3 in the past about her upbringing.
“Honestly, I didn’t know any better because I was raised in a household where we revered Ronald Reagan and that was that,” Siebel Newsom told KCRA 3’s Edie Lambert in 2019 after having just moved to Sacramento. “There was no questioning it.”
Newsom told reporters his goal in the nation’s capitol this week has been to “get everybody on the same page” ahead of Trump’s presidency.
That has included talking about California’s past litigation against the previous Trump administration and Newsom’s new plans for a special legislative session aimed at protecting his progressive policies.
Newsom said he talked about “needing to be proactive, not reactive” on issues related to the environment and immigration.
He’s also in D.C. to get President Joe Biden to approve health care, climate efforts and disaster relief funds that require the federal government’s approval.
