News We Love: Sensory Santa Workshops help people with differing abilities enjoy holiday traditions
HOLIDAY TRADITION. OKAY. YOU READY? ARE YOU READY? WALKING INTO A WINTER WONDERLAND FOR A PRIVATE AND PERSONAL MEETING WITH SANTA CLAUS HIMSELF. GOOD JOB. HER ATTENTION SPAN IS VERY SHORT, SO GOING TO THE MALL IS JUST WAY TOO OVERWHELMING FOR HER. SO THE FACT THAT WE CAN JUST COME HERE AND HAVE A SMALL, INTIMATE PICTURE WITH SANTA IS JUST VERY NICE FOR US. 11 YEAR OLD AVA LEE IS ONE OF SEVERAL PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS PARTICIPATING IN THIS YEAR’S SENSORY SANTA’S WORKSHOP. IT’S A COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE HARFORD COUNTY OFFICE OF DISABILITY SERVICES AND HARFORD COUNTY PARKS AND RECREATION. WE ALWAYS LIKE TO FOCUS ON OUR FAMILIES, AND WE WE HAVE A STRONG URGENCY TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL FAMILIES OF VARYING ABILITIES HAVE OPPORTUNITIES. YOU KNOW, DURING THE HOLIDAYS, EVERYBODY KIND OF THINKS SANTA. SO WE DECIDED TO START THIS SANTA EXPERIENCE. THAT EXPERIENCE INCLUDES A QUIET SPACE WHERE KIDS AND THEIR FAMILIES CAN TAKE PHOTOS WITH SANTA AND GRAB A GIFT BAG BEFORE MOVING TO THE NEXT ROOM, WHERE THEY CAN CREATE HOLIDAY CRAFTS WITH THEIR OWN PERSONAL ELF. GUIDING THE WAY. A GREAT WAY FOR KIDS LIKE GABE DENNISON TO PARTICIPATE IN HOLIDAY TRADITIONS. HE’S OPENED UP BECAUSE THERE’S NOT SO MANY PEOPLE, AND HE FEELS COMFORTABLE, SO THAT’S PERFECT FOR HIM. AN INCLUSIVE EXPERIENCE FOR ALL. THE PERFECT GIFT FOR THESE FAMILIES THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON. I JUST LOVE THE FACT THAT THEY DO THINGS LIKE THIS FOR SPECIAL NEEDS, BECAUSE THERE ISN’T USUALLY A WHOLE LOT AROUND. THE FACT THAT THEY’RE ADDING MORE IS IS VERY IT’S WONDERFUL. THE NEXT SENSORY SANTA’S WORKSHOP IS SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14TH FROM 10 TO 2 AT THE EDGEWOOD SENIOR CENTER. YOU DO HAVE TO REGISTER BEFORE YOU HEAD OVER. ON SATURDAY. WE’LL PUT MORE INFORMATION ON HOW YOU CAN DO THAT ON OUR WEBSITE FOR YOU IN CHURCHVILLE. I’
