Bret Harte Elementary student stabbed by fellow student at Curtis Park school, Sacramento police say
A student stabbed another student with a small kitchen knife during class at Bret Harte Elementary School in Sacramento's Curtis Park neighborhood on Monday, officials said.
Police were dispatched just before noon to the school at 9th Avenue and Franklin Boulevard.
The injured student sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, Sacramento police said. Officers detained the juvenile suspect.
The victim's mother, Rocio Ortega, said her son is 12 years old and has autism.
"He's supposed to be safe in school how did this happen? That's the worst thing you ever imagine...your kid getting stabbed at school when he's supposed to be safe," said Rocio Ortega the mother of the stabbing victim.
Ortega said her son was treated at UC Davis Medical Center and would be released from the hospital on Monday. The Sacramento City Unified School District said the other student stabbed Ortega's son in the shoulder.
Ortega said her son is afraid to go back to school.
"He's sad about it, he's still wondering why, he doesn't know why," she said. "He's confused, he's afraid, he doesn't want to go back to school."
Ortega said she's reported incidents of bullying for the past year but hasn't received a response she felt would help her son. She said after this incident, she wants to pursue charges.
Sacramento City Unified said the other student involved is either a 5th or 6th-grade student. The classroom was a joint class of both grades with typically two teachers. During this incident, there was a teacher and one substitute teacher in the classroom according to district officials.
The school district told KCRA that the other student involved was held at the school and questioned by Sacramento Police.
The attacker will be referred "for immediate and appropriate disciplinary action, in addition to other potential legal consequences," Wolfe said.
"This is both shocking and profoundly scary for our entire school community. Our priority right now is to focus on the recovery of the injured student and provide emotional support for any students who witnessed the incident," Wolfe said.
"There will be a disciplinary hearing, an investigation, and our student hearing and placement team will decide what the appropriate course of action is in terms of discipline and then of course if there's any kind of legal consequences from the police department," said Brian Heap, chief communications officer for the school district.
Bret Harte Elementary School serves students in kindergarten through sixth grade. It’s in the Sacramento City Unified School District.
Wolfe's message said counselors would be on campus to assist students on Monday "for as long as needed."
She said that students or parents can report bullying or safety threats through the district's WeTip hotline by calling 844-916-4544, by texting 'report' to that number, or online here.
